Few studios have left their mark on music history like Sound Factory.
Since it opened its doors in Hollywood in the 1960s, Sound Factory has been used and adored by countless renowned artists including the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Marvin Gaye, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Paul McCartney, among many others. Today, it’s also where many of the sample packs that are released on Splice Sounds are crafted.
In the video above, Max Nepa-Rewak and Cameell Hanna gave us an exclusive tour of Sound Factory. Join us as we walk through the lounge, control room, and live rooms, and discuss key pieces of hardware and historic stories that make the studio such a legendary space.
“Any time you walk in here and see all these records, there’s a real sense of history,” Max comments. “Even if we’re not actually making records, it’s incredible to know that you’re standing in the same space that Linda Ronstadt or Oingo Boingo were at some point… I like to think that the sound waves are still bouncing around.”
“An acoustician told me once that acoustics are one part science and one part witchcraft,” Cameell responds. “So there might be a little bit of sorcery at play.”
