“I feel like Migos and I changed the sound of hip hop at the time with this song right here,” Zaytoven tells us as he points towards his plaque for the trio’s debut single, “Versace.”
“This was 2013—I had my first big song, ‘So Icy’ in 2004. ‘Versace’ was the rebirth of Zaytoven; it made Zaytoven a brand new producer, all over again.”
In the video above, Zaytoven returned to the Splice YouTube channel to give us an exclusive tour of his studio, sharing stories behind his favorite records, breaking down his go-to tools, and more. Join us to get an intimate look into the legendary producer’s creative perspective.
“I started in my mom’s basement, and I know a lot of producers and artists are out there who are still in their parents’ basement, or in some room that’s not that big,” Zaytoven reflects as he wraps the tour. “They don’t have a lot of equipment or fancy stuff, but that’s their space where they’re creating at. For all of y’all who are doing that, make sure y’all are continuing to go hard and keep grinding, because for somebody like me—I never imagined being where I’m at right now. I just know I was in love with making music.”
“And I’ll say this—some of my best music, some of my biggest songs, and some of my greatest times come from those days. So, don’t despise the small beginnings, because great things will come. Believe that, keep working, keep grinding, stay consistent, and you’ll see what happens.”
