Behind the sample in Pokémon‘s “Pikkaan!”: A conversation with Petal Supply

“Pikkaan!” is the infectious ending theme heard in the current Pokémon anime, Pokémon Horizons.

The track is crafted by Giga and TeddyLoid, two producers who are frequent collaborators and behind some of the biggest hits across J-pop, EDM, and vocaloid music.

What surprised music listeners—and one artist in particular—was the prominent inclusion of a sample crafted by Canadian producer, vocalist, and songwriter Petal Supply: hear the original sample on Splice Sounds here.

“Someone tagged me in an Instagram Story about it, and I had no clue what it said because it was all in Japanese,” Petal Supply tells us. “I thought maybe it was just a mashup or something, and that the visuals of Pokémon dancing over it were unrelated at first. When I looked it up, I was so shocked to find that not only was it a real song by Giga and Teddyloid, but it was on the official Pokémon YouTube channel.”

“When I realized it was the new official ending theme, I was so ecstatic—I immediately showed all of my friends. I had guests staying over at my house at the time and I made them watch it too. I’ve always been a massive Pokémon fan since I was a literal baby so it was so incredible to feel like I was included in the Pokémon universe in some capacity!”

How the sample in “Pikkaan!” was made

While it’s light and catchy on the surface, the loop used in “Pikkaan!” features an intricate blend of carefully-placed drums, pitched vocals, and effects—and although it has been reimagined in “Pikkaan!,” fans would be quick to recognize that the sample is a reflection of Petal Supply’s distinctive sonic identity.

“I would describe my sound as playful, bouncy, and high energy,” she says. “I’ve always been really inspired by trance music, especially the vocal trance of the ’00s, and once I heard PC Music and SOPHIE, my perception of what kinds of sounds were possible was blown apart. I became obsessed with experimenting and seeing how far I could take my sound design, as well as pitching up and processing my vocals to a nearly unrecognizable point.”

“A lot of my sound design is initiated with fairly simple sounds made in either Serum or Spire, and I love to experiment with seeing how much I can distort these basic sounds into something new. I’ve had a lot of fun using a combination of Ableton’s stock effects like Grain Delay, Corpus, and certain spectral resonators, as well as things like Goodhertz’ Lossy and iZotope’s Trash.

“For this sample, I made all of the drum samples in Serum. I was playing around with seeing how my kicks would interact with multiple layers of Grain Delay. I tried filling out the loop in various ways; it kept sounding darker and more intense than I’d like, so I decided to sample my own pitched-up and bent vocals to brighten the mood of the loop. I’m really happy with how it turned out!”

Petal Supply’s advice for music creators

For those who are still working towards their first big hit or placement, Petal Supply emphasizes the importance of continuous experimentation. “If I had to give one tip for budding producers, it would be to keep trying out new tricks,” she shares. “Whenever I’ve felt stagnant in my creativity, trying something new—be it a plugin or an unexplored method with the tools I already have—has kept me inspired and keeps producing fun!”

“I just hope people have fun with my pack,” she tells us. “The pack was created through experimentation and it brought me a lot of joy to make, so I hope I can inspire those same qualities in other music creators’ processes. It’s been really awesome to hear what people have come up with so far using my sounds—it’s even inspired me to try out some new ways to use them! Thank you so much to everyone who’s downloaded Garden Toys.”
