Alissia’s go-to gear
Keys and synths
- Wurlitzer: “I love it because it really brings things back to basics. Mine’s an original from the ’70s, and has such a warm tone. Lately, I’ve been trying to write songs more organically—just sitting with the artist at the keys and starting from there.”
- Vocoder: “This one’s inspired by one of my favorite albums, Sunlight by Herbie Hancock. It has such a cool, vintage vibe.”
- Minimoog Voyager: “This was probably the first synth I ever got. I was deep into P-Funk and Bernie Worrell, and I knew I needed a Voyager. The sound is just wild—so powerful.”
- Roland Juno-106: “If I’m not working here in my studio, I always try to request one. It’s super inspiring—something about it just gets you excited. It sounds great instantly, with a real old-school character.”
- Sequential Prophet-10: “This one’s kind of like the Prophet-5, but with some fun additions. It leans into that ’80s vibe, but not in an overpowering way. Honestly, either the Prophet-10 or the Juno is on every record I’ve ever made (unless there are no synths at all).”
Basses
- P-Bass: “Every era of my life had its own bass—I started on a simple Squier Fender, but then came the Paul Jackson phase, which meant I needed a P-Bass.”
- Music Man StingRay: “After that, I had a Louis Johnson phase and got a Music Man StingRay, which represents a huge era for me emotionally and sonically.”
- Larry Graham replica: “Eventually, I got into my Larry Graham phase, so I got a Larry Graham replica bass; I even added my logo to it to make it personal. I’ve always been big on studying the greats and making music that reflects true musicianship, while still adding my own touch.”
Drum machines
- Rhythm Ace / Rhythm King: “I went through a big Sly Stone phase, so I picked up the Rhythm Ace and Rhythm King—OG drum machines that I sometimes use instead of a metronome. I’ll sometimes even leave them in the track.”
- LinnDrum: “My first-ever drum machine was the LinnDrum (I’m of course a huge Prince fan). I knew I needed to get my hands on a real one, and I actually got it for a great price. I’ve made a lot of records on it, and honestly, it beats any Linn sample out there. Even the feel of it—just touching it—is inspiring.”
