Drill sounds are gritty and hard-hitting, from sliding 808 basslines and ominous melodies to rapidly syncopated hi-hat loops and aggressive street-centered lyricism. Originating as a subgenre of hip-hop in Chicago around 2010, Drill took heavy sonic influences from trap music and has has since influenced movements in New York, the UK and other parts of the world, with each developing distinct regional styles.
