WondaGurl and Boi-1da on mentorship, sound design, and making sounds your own

When Ebony Oshunrinde entered a Battle of the Beat Makers competition in 2012, she didn’t have a stage name.

She had always looked up to one of the judges, Boi-1da, and decided to append “Gurl” to “Wonda” (1da) at the very last second as tribute. WondaGurl ended up winning first prize and linked up with her namesake and idol. Amazed by her work, Boi-1da took her under his wing as his protégé, and she has since gone on to produce hit after hit spanning Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money,” Travis Scott’s “Antidote,” and Drake’s “Used To.”

We recently got WondaGurl and Boi-1da into the studio together. While showing each other their sounds, the two discussed mentorship, sound design, her sample pack, and more – watch the video below:

WondaGurl brings her stellar beat making chops to Splice with her new sample pack – check it out here.
