Koal Harrison, better known as The Kount, is a Toronto-based producer and multi-instrumentalist.
Known for his polyrhythmic sensibilities and signature drum sounds, he has produced for the likes of BROCKHAMPTON, Logic, and Noname, in addition to amassing millions of streams on his own music. He’s also beloved by the music producer community for his forward-thinking series of sample packs.
In celebration of the launch of his Kount Labs label on Splice Sounds, we had the unique opportunity to visit his home studio of the same name in Toronto. Join us as The Kount walks us through his collection of hardware synths, drum machines, effects units, and instruments that shape his warm, textured sonic identity.
“If you’re someone who’s aspiring to build a studio like this, make sure that you’re really, really great at doing what you do in your bedroom first before you try springing for a bigger space or getting more gear,” he tells us. “Really learn the stuff you have first, and make the most of the space that you got. I miss my little bedroom space all the time—I made some of my hardest beats in a tiny basement room. Those spaces are equally important for learning.”
