Samba samples are built around the layered percussion of the bateria: surdo kick drums, repinique snare fills, tamborim syncopations, pandeiro grooves, agogo bell patterns, and the distinctive cuíca friction drum. The genre originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, emerging from the predominantly Afro-Brazilian communities of Rio de Janeiro as a fusion of African rhythmic traditions with indigenous and Portuguese musical elements. Samba went on to become the foundation of Brazilian national identity and directly influenced bossa nova, Brazilian funk, and a wide range of contemporary global electronic music.
