How to use reharmonization in your remixes

Remixes are a great medium for showcasing an existing song in a whole new light.

A great remix can be a powerful catalyst for success for both the original artist and the remixing artist. That said, how do we approach adding our own spin to already-released music? While there are many ideas that we can explore, one particularly powerful technique that’s almost always worth considering is reharmonization – or in other words, reimagining the song’s harmonies and chord progressions.

In the tutorial video above, we demonstrate how to approach reharmonization by creating two new progressions for the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love?” With each example, we cover everything from how to make nitty-gritty note selection decisions to how to approach the big picture of our harmonies.

Do you have any questions about reharmonization? What are some of your favorite remixes that make use of the technique? Let us know in the comments below.
