Oak Felder (Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj) cooks up a beat in Pro Tools

“This is what producers do; we wake up and look for sounds,” Oak Felder tells us.

“We take a shower; we look for sounds. We take out the trash; we look for sounds. Our girlfriends and wives and significant others are looking for attention from us—but we’re looking for sounds. That’s what I’m doing. That’s a producer’s whole life—just looking for sounds.”

Oak Felder is a GRAMMY-award winning hip hop and pop producer who has sold over 60 million records working alongside the likes of Demi Lovato, John Legend, Rita Ora, Alessia Cara, Nicki Minaj, and countless others. Hear a few of his hit songs, including “Sorry Not Sorry,” “Scars To Your Beautiful,” “Distraction,” and more below:

Oak Felder on the Splice x Pro Tools integration

In celebration of the launch of the new Splice x Pro Tools integration, we had the unique opportunity to join Felder at his home studio, where he reacts to the integration and makes a track with it. Watch along above to hear his insights into the creative process and see how he uses the Search with Sound feature to kickstart his production.

“This is a fantastic way for me to get started,” Felder says. “Producers know—if you’re in the room and a bunch of people are sitting behind you, they’re waiting for you to start a vibe. Nothing is cooler than being able to sit down and quickly get a vibe started. You still have to put in the effort to make it exactly what you want, but this enables a great starting point. In five minutes, you have a vibe—enough for people to start writing to or for me to loop and add new sections.

“It’s a super quick way to pull things in while still using my creativity—anyone can feed you loops, but you have to know how to sequence, add and remove energy, and create transitions. And why is that cool? Because I can get more ideas out. If you’re not used to technology or jumping between apps, this integration makes it easy. It’s an open door. Anyone can take their creative ideas and lay them down.

“More creativity out in the world is better. We don’t find greatness until we turn over every stone. Don’t be discouraged by tech. It’s right in front of you—it’s simple and inspiring.”
