Watch Madlib craft samples in the studio with Soul Surplus

“I have everything,” Madlib says as he looks towards the Soul Surplus team.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that Madlib is among the most legendary figures in hip hop history—he’s produced timeless entries in the discographies of the likes of MF DOOM, J Dilla, and Freddie Gibbs (among many others), and his Beat Konducta series and releases under his Quasimoto alias have inspired beat makers across generations.

We’re thrilled to share that Madlib has released his first-ever sample pack on Splice, produced alongside the Soul Surplus team he shares a long creative history with. The pack brings nothing less than the iconic sound Madlib’s known for—soulful, funky, and jazzy loops colored with tape wobble and left-of-center grooves. Watch along above as he and the Soul Surplus team craft the four loops below in the studio and discuss their creative process.
