“Phoenix is the culmination of a lifetime of loving synthesizers and synthesis,” BT tells us.
Few creatives have made a mark on electronic music like BT—the legendary producer, DJ, composer, and audio engineer is widely credited for inventing stutter editing, which started with him cutting up tape with a razor blade when he was just fourteen years old. In the decades since, he’s worked alongside everyone from Tiësto to Britney Spears, developed the sound of Fast & Furious‘ score, shared his iconic samples with producers everywhere, and put a 110-piece orchestra inside of a glitch record with his album This Binary Universe.
In the walkthrough video above, BT gives an absolute masterclass on Phoenix, showcasing some of its most distinctive features while offering his own insights on how the hybrid synth came together. He also dedicates 30 minutes to pure sonic exploration, providing just a peek at the types of sounds you can achieve with it.
“We’re just scratching the surface with this,” BT shares. “This is truly a realized dream, making this instrument and also doing it with the Spitfire Audio family, who is such an incredible group of humans that are all musicians themselves, making tools for human musicians. I’m really proud to have made this instrument with them. Like I said, Phoenix will continue to be a living instrument. There’s so much planned for this over the next year. So, anybody that gets Phoenix will get all those things as well.
“And I hope that this instrument deeply inspires your compositions, whether you’re writing to picture or you’re making records. There’s so much love and attention to detail and nuance in this instrument. It’s something that I’ve wanted to make my whole life. And so, I’m thrilled to share it with you. I can’t wait to hear it on your records, in your score cues, in your video games, and all the things that you use it for. So, thank you for spending this time with me, and I look forward to hearing what you make with Phoenix. It’s an honor to share this with you.”
