The Producer’s Guide to Post-Punk – Dutch Revz / ProdKult

Post-punk emerged in the late ’70s as a raw, experimental evolution of punk, combining DIY grit with influences from dub, krautrock, disco, and art-school experimentation. Today, artists like Dutch Revz and ProdKult continue to carry its spirit forward, providing producers with authentic loops and one-shots that capture the genre’s hypnotic grooves, textured guitars, and atmospheric energy.

Our Interview w/ Dutch Revz / ProdKult

Where it started:
After ’76–’79 punk, musicians started asking “what else?” The answer was post-punk—rooted in Manchester and London, with reflections in New York and across Europe. It carried the same DIY nerve but dropped the strict rules, pulling ideas from dub, krautrock, disco, and art-school experimentation. Cold rehearsal rooms, tiny labels, and cheap gear gave it its raw texture, eventually branching into goth, coldwave/darkwave, and new wave.

Key Artists:
Pioneers: Joy Division / New Order, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wire, Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd, Bauhaus, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Chameleons.
Today’s Scene: Molchat Doma, She Past Away, Lebanon Hanover, Twin Tribes, Mareux, Ekkstacy, thxsomch, Fontaines D.C., IDLES, Protomartyr.

The Sound:
Bass is upfront, often melodic; guitars use clean tones with chorus, flanger, and reverb; drums are steady and hypnotic, often drum machines or processed live kits; synths are simple and repetitive; vocals range from monotone chants to expressive singing. Production embraces rawness, atmosphere, and imperfection.

Culture & Context:
Post-punk reflected collapsing industrial cities, political unrest, and underground nightlife. The music was raw, grey, and unpolished, mirroring its environment.

Legacy & Influence:
Post-punk influenced goth, new wave, alternative, shoegaze, and modern indie. Its DNA persists in bands like Ekkstacy, Molchat Doma, and Thxsomch.

Why it matters:
Dutch Revz explains that post-punk excites him because of its range: from cold and hypnotic to warm and emotive. Its contrast and diversity make it timeless, inspiring the sounds he creates.
