BTS: Making the pack with Genic
Duo Genic has become a favorite amongst drum & bass listeners. Based in Leeds, UK, they’ve played at mainstay clubs such as Le Bikini alongside some of the most influential names in bass music. Their latest release, Rough Nights, is one of their most expansive musical exploits to date. Throughout the record, you’ll be taken on a sonic journey through lush bass tones, robotic chimes, softer melodies, and explosively subterranean bangers.
We talked to the dup about what it was like creating this pack, and why they wanted to bring it into existence. They shared, "We like to keep our samples quite raw to experiment further with them whilst writing new tunes. We feel that samples are good for getting down quick musical ideas, but we love to develop them further in future sessions by processing with FX and other production techniques. So each track we create is like a journey, where the end product may be musically and rhythmically similar to the initial idea but will develop tonally over time.”

The duo said they use Splice Studio to collaborate remotely. One of them gets a track started, and the other expands on it with their ideas. They shared, “we’re quite lucky we take so much inspiration from each other and we trust each other with the ideas. We don’t have to be in the same studio. It’s difficult to find that in a duo, but we work so well together. “Rough Nights”, for example, started as a completely different idea than the final result. There are so many options, you can’t let the ego get too hung up on your specific idea. Instead, you have to go with how it’s flowing.”
