Collaborate with the sounds of the Western Ghats
India’s 1,600km-long Western Ghats is a mountain chain containing forests older than those in the Himalayas. The UN recognizes these ghats (a mountain pass) as a world heritage site, and they make up one of the earth’s top eight biodiversity hotspots. They’re home to over 7,402 species of flowering plants, 1,814 species of non-flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species, 6,000 insects species, and 290 freshwater fish species.
Sound is a potent vehicle to address climate change, and the thriving biodiversity in several South Indian forests are continually threatened by large-scale infrastructure projects - even today. With Splice Explores: South India, artists can collaborate with the sounds of the region, thereby partaking in the broader and much-needed conversation around climate action. The act of listening is an invitation to not only connect with the most intimate parts of ourselves, but also to our environments.
