The intimacy of acoustic soul

Though not all of it is acoustic, neo-soul music is more intimate than its modern R&B counterparts. Examples of this warmer, nostalgia-tinged sound can be heard in the music of D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, and India.Arie, who released her debut album aptly titled Acoustic Soul 20 years ago.

Nostalgia and depth (both, undoubtedly — and this is no dig — performative) were the coin of the realm.”
