The flute has long held a special place in jazz, its breathy tones weaving through compositions with an effortless cool. But beyond its traditional home, the instrument has found new resonance in modern genres like hip-hop, lo-fi, and cinematic music. Suite Melodies - Jazz Flute, a sample pack from flautist Delandria Mills and composer Marcus Myers, brings this iconic sound into fresh creative spaces.
Meet the Composer: Marcus Myers
Marcus Myers is a seasoned drummer, composer and educator with a knack for blending organic instrumentation with modern production styles. A regular collaborator for the Splice label Signature, his work spans orchestral arrangements and scoring, hip-hop production, and ambient soundscapes — making him the perfect collaborator to bring jazz flute into new creative spaces.
The Interview
Q: Marcus, how did you first connect with Delandria Mills for this collaboration?
Marcus Myers: Delandria and I met through a mutual friend of ours by the name of Chris Stevens, who's also a co-collaborator on the Signature label for Splice. But the funny thing is I grew up listening to Delandria before I even knew who she was. She was a part of this gospel band called Soundcheck — they were otherworldly, honestly. I remember watching those videos over and over, astonished by the musicality. And there she was, holding down the flute section. It was such a full-circle moment to get to work with her on this pack.
Q: The flute has carved out a surprising place in contemporary genres like hip-hop. What’s your take on that?
Marcus Myers: It’s amazing to hear how the flute is showing up in modern music. One song that stands out to me is Mask Off by Future — that track was huge, and hearing the flute as the lead (even though it was pitched differently) was wild. It wasn’t the first time the flute had a moment in hip-hop, but that song had massive reach. The flute’s unique voice and character make it unforgettable. I think it’ll always have a place in music, no matter the genre.
Q: Flute performance requires some serious breath control and technique. What stands out to you about the instrument’s physicality?
Marcus Myers: The flute is such an intimate instrument. There’s so much you have to dial in just to get a sound out of it. For example, you’re not blowing directly into the mouthpiece — your air has to sail over it at just the right velocity to produce a sound. Then there's the fingering, which is tricky enough on its own. People like Delandria make it look easy, but it’s astonishing. Unlike drums or keys where you can just start playing, the flute requires patience, commitment, and intentionality. Breath control powers everything. It’s incredible what skilled flautists can do with it.
Q: What advice would you give to producers who want to work with flute sounds in their tracks?
Marcus Myers: First, learn the history. Find records with flute and really study the instrument. It has a range, a timbre, a way of speaking — understanding that helps you honor the past and shape your sound for the future. I’m not saying you need to master it, but respecting its voice goes a long way. And then, explore. These instruments evolve with every generation. Don’t be intimidated by the flute — sit with it, listen, and experiment. I’m excited to see what producers create from this pack.
