Craft on Display: How Samples From Mars Cut the Iconic SP-1200 to Vinyl

There’s clean—and then there’s character. The new Vinyl SP From Mars sample pack is a deep dive into the latter: a full-circle sound design process that runs modern and vintage sources through the legendary SP-1200 and onto vinyl, picking up warmth, grit, and vibe every step of the way. The result is a heavyweight pack of 700 vinyl one-shots that feel as good as they sound.

Here's how the process came together:

1. Sound Sourcing
Before any sampling happened, the team pulled together a dream lineup of sound sources—both classic and experimental. Drum machines like the Perkons HD-01, Pulsar-23, Machinedrum, and Linndrum were tracked alongside acoustic drums, bass guitar, live percussion, and even custom tape sessions. Every sound was recorded with intention, chosen for its unique tone and movement.

2. Sampling the SP-1200
Next came the SP-1200—the 12-bit sampler that defined the sound of late-'80s and '90s hip hop. Using original floppy disks, the team fed the raw recordings into the machine, squeezing out the SP’s signature crunch, sparkle, and punch. Re-pitching and internal resampling pushed the color even further.

3. Cutting to Vinyl
Instead of stopping at digital bounce, the sounds were pressed to acetate using a real vinyl lathe. This step introduced subtle saturation, analog artifacts, and the tactile warmth only physical grooves can provide. The goal? Turn samples into moments you could feel.

4. Sampling the Vinyl:
Finally, the vinyl was resampled using a high-end rotary mixer and multiple needles—capturing the clean versions and the dusty, worn-out edges as the acetate began to break down. Some hits were then processed further with analog compression and EQ to enhance the harmonic character.

The result is a library of one-shots that blend precision with patina—perfect for hip hop, house, lo-fi, techno, or any genre where feel matters more than perfection.

Watch the video above for an inside look at the process—and hear how real-world gear and good taste come together to make some of the dirtiest, punchiest samples around.

Whether you're digging for that perfect dusty kick, a crunchy snare, or a melodic one-shot with real-world warmth, Vinyl SP From Mars delivers. With over 700 samples shaped by iconic gear, pressed to vinyl, and processed for maximum vibe, this pack brings analog flavor straight to your DAW. Check it out and start building with sounds that carry weight, texture, and history.
