Our Interview w/ Emilie Rachel
Tell us about yourself – what led you to music/vocal production?
I started in music from a very young age and always knew I wanted to be involved. Musical Theatre initially guided me, and I explored writing and storytelling before realizing I wanted to be at the center of music creation. From Open Mic nights singing Amy Winehouse covers to earning a BA (Hons) in Vocals at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, my journey took me through busking, studio work, and collaborations with producers and DJs, ultimately shaping where I am today.
What's your typical setup for recording high-quality vocals?
I keep it simple: Shure SM7B studio mic, Scarlett interface, Logic, and CLA Vocals plugin. It’s not about the mic; it’s how you work it.
What’s your approach to vocal production?
I record multiple takes per section, then comp and refine. From there, I use plugins to help the vocals sit within the mix, adapting to the track.
Processing techniques for sample packs?
My focus is on clarity and controlled space. I rely heavily on Waves CLA plugin. Each vocal must stand out while blending seamlessly, free of interference.
How does creating toplines, adlibs, or one-shots differ from traditional songwriting?
It’s more technical and sound-focused. Takes go directly to producers, so they must be polished and thoughtful. Traditional songwriting sessions are less rigid and more free-flowing.
Favorite vocal recordings and inspirations?
Clementine Douglas inspires me—her vocals are effortless, soulful, and captivating. I admire her process and vocal chain.
