“I make beats seriously,” Southside says.
“I’m a producer who’s serious—that’s my job, and I don’t play with that… They could say I’m arrogant or whatever, but if I’m not the best I’ll become the best. I’m built for this at this point now, and I’m not gonna fight it or run from it.”
Southside is a GRAMMY-nominated producer, rapper, and co-founder of the influential production collective 808 Mafia. Hailing from Atlanta, he rose to prominence by crafting hard-hitting cinematic trap beats for the likes of Waka Flocka Flame, Future, Gucci Mane, Travis Scott, and Lil Durk, to name a few.
Known for his aggressive 808s, dark melodies, and signature producer tag, he has played a pivotal role in shaping modern trap music with a deep catalog of hits and a reputation for high-energy production; from the early 2010s to today, Southside remains the king of trap and a powerhouse in hip hop’s ever-evolving sound.
In celebration of the release of his new King of Trap Vol. 1 sample pack, Southside sat down with us above to share his sounds and creative process with the Splice community. Watch along as he crafts a beat and shares his insights.
“I’m cool with giving the sauce because I feel like they should have a fair chance,” he tells us. “You know what I’m saying? Nobody’s gonna do the same thing with the same drums, so I can give you everything I use and it’s still not gonna be the same. But, it might create some shit that’s ten times better than me—and I’m not mad at stuff like that. I love that kind of thing.”
