From ten-year-old Skrillex fan to global sensation: Meet Kooldrink

Kooldrink (born Munashe Kugarakuripi) is a 25-year-old Zimbabwean-born music producer and recording artist best known for discovering, developing, and producing Grammy Award-winner Tyla and her debut single "Getting Late" from the record that set both of their careers into motion.

His story begins long before that record and before production credits with labels such as Universal, Mad Decent, and Parlophone. His passionate dedication to production was sparked when he first heard Skrillex's music at just 10 years old, falling head-first into the world of EDM. He told the online publication TRUELOVE that the genre’s fusion of house, disco, synthpop, techno, and trance music is what “blew my mind” and sparked a passion he would spend the next 15 or so years developing.

Under the Kooldrink alias since 2019, he has honed his craft at the forefront of African electronic music, delicately balancing street sonics and intentional sound design with a saccharine pop sentimentality that has firmly rooted his position in the global dance zeitgeist. As the founder of Pop-Piano, he has played a pivotal role in shaping and popularizing the genre on a global scale.

It comes as no surprise that this persistence and excellence have seen the young artist quickly ascend to prominence on the world stage. Hot on the heels of the release of Tyla's "Getting Late" in 2021, Kooldrink was tapped by Ed Sheeran to create the official Amapiano remix of his runaway hit "Bad Habits" for Asylum / Warner. He's also worked with other world-renowned artists like Diplo, Masego, Heavy-K, and more.
