Ian Chang taps unending creativity with Sensory Percussion

Sunhouse Sensory Percussion uses a combination of sensors to directly capture the vibrations of your entire drum. Essentially, the system enables you to manipulate samples of any instrument or effect as part of your kit, creating a hybrid setup. Any drum kit can be used to control melodies and harmonies, add a piano or orchestra, or combine samples from your favorite song.

For this Splice Originals pack, Ian Chang used Sunhouse Sensory Percussion to manipulate and perform sounds from his previous Splice packs—Obtuse Rhythms and Metal Structures—to create entirely new sounds. The resulting one-shots and loops are a demonstration of the unending creativity that can result from simply dragging and dropping samples onto your drum pads.

Originally from Hong Kong but living in Dallas, percussionist Ian Chang makes electronic music physical. Using drums to control and manipulate samples, Chang brings human fluidity to a metronomic genre. The result is a seamless marriage of raw performative intensity and sophisticated sound design.

Chang is a drummer for Son Lux, Matthew Dear, Body Language, Landlady, and many others. He also has his own avant-garde experimental electronic beat project under his own name, where he performs using Sun House Percussion unit.
