Great music is often a topo-emotional roadmap plotted in melody and rhythm, easier to feel than to put into words. Vintage Keys with Aron Magner, the newest pack on Splice Originals, stands as an example of how that feeling can even extend to a collection of samples. Magner’s keyboard explorations transmit both emotion and energy within the confines of loops and one-shots, feeling both familiar and new. They convey a particular sort of nostalgic warmth that makes us long to relive a life we may never have experienced.
Aron is a renowned jazz/everything-under-the-sun keyboard player who shares our obsession for dusty old analog synths and sample-based music. We invited him to lay down some melodies, chords, bass lines, and doodles on his favorites. He played the Moog Model D, the Juno 6, a Clavinet D6, and a handful of others, including his iconic Access Virus TI2. We recorded his performance with some Neve 1081s and 1073s and added the Gibson Maestro and Acetone FR1 for accompanying cadences. We ran everything through API pre-amps to bolster the sonic blanket.
