Purrfect Beats: Meredith Bull on Her Cat-Inspired Sample Pack
Meredith Bull isn’t a stranger to music. She taught at the world-famous Icon Collective. She has millions and millions of viral plays on TikTok with her *drum roll please* Cat Mashup songs! And now, she has decided to take her viral approach to music into a serious (as much as it is FUN) album called “Meowlbum”. She worked with a multitude of PURRducers to get this album together too… but let us not forget her infectious voice that ties it all together. She is serious raw talent laid into something as fun and loving as our fluffy feline friends. We sat down with Meredith for an interview and here is what she had to say!
Splice: Tell us about yourself – what led you to production and creating music?
Meredith Bull: I’ve been writing and singing since I was a kid. I got my start in musical theatre (shoutout being Annie in the National Tour at age 11!). Eventually once I was an adult I felt pulled in so many directions. I was working in Film, TV, VoiceOver and music. After a freak accident injuring my spine in 2018 I had a moment of clarity that if I got my mobility back I’d put my all into 1 thing, and after some soul searching I recognized that thing I couldn’t live without was music. I enrolled in a music production program online and a few months after graduating had my first viral song on Tik Tok!
Splice: So CATS! Aside from them being as awesome as they are; what inspired the sounds included in the album which lead to this sample pack?
Meredith Bull: I’ve always been cat obsessed. I used to sign my school papers Meredith “cat lady” Bull. My first viral mixes on Tik tok were all based around fun cat sounds I came across. I’m not sure why but I just hear rhythm and patterns in “non music” everyday sounds. Wether its the faucet dripping, a closing of a cabinet, a machine’s beep - I call them melodic samples. Even though those aren’t songs on their own they still have rhythm and tone which I instantly hear in song form if that makes sense?
Splice: What did you think and feel when you noticed your first cat mashup video start to go viral on TikTok?
Meredith Bull: I was thrilled are you kidding?! It’s every artists dream to find their audience and engage with them in a meaningful way. Especially with the cat songs, they bring people so much joy and I’m so grateful to be part of something that brings levity in an often dark world.
Splice: How does the topline creation process for an album with cats differ from a more traditional instrument?
Meredith Bull: Its actually very easy because it sounds just like a vocal topline to me. But something I have come across is that cats are limited in how many vocalizations they can make. I think I’ve narrowed it down to 4-6 types. LOL So eventually I will move on from this “genre” because there’s only so many types of sounds you can create working with a cat voice. :)
Splice: How do you expect people to use your Meowlbum sample pack for their own productions? Which is going to get the producers excited; more cats or more you?
Meredith Bull: I think there is a lot of value in all of my singing/vocal samples in the pack. I hope producers are able to have fun with those and be inspired in whatever genre they make. I have been singing professionally since the age of 7 and take pride in my instrument and tone. I think I have a sound that’s not as common as what is out there and that’s fun! As far as the cat samples, there are some really unique percussive samples that you wouldn’t know come from a cat unless you were told. So that might be a fun Easter egg for producers adding them to their projects!
Meredith Bull’s Meowlbum sample pack is more than a novelty—it’s a testament to how creativity can bloom from the quirkiest of inspirations. By blending her seasoned vocal talent with the rhythmic magic of feline sounds, she’s created a toolkit that’s equal parts charming and genuinely useful for producers across genres. Whether you’re hunting for an unexpected percussive texture or a unique topline, this pack invites you to think outside the litter box and embrace the joyful, slightly mischievous spirit that Meredith brings to all her music.
