Splice empowers the young music producers at FamFrequency Productions

Early adopters from global institutions are helping to shape the future of Splice Education in 2025 and beyond.

FamFrequency Productions, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has incorporated Splice into their music production curriculum. Founder and CEO Jonathan Edwards recounts how Splice has revolutionized the learning experience, fostered inspiration, and helped students overcome creative blocks.

Edwards writes, “At FamFrequency Productions, our mission is to empower high school students in Philadelphia through music and entrepreneurship. On the production side, Splice has been a critical tool to help us move the needle with the students we serve. For young artists, building a robust sound library can be a daunting and time-consuming task. This is where Splice comes to the rescue, offering a massive collection of sounds that give our students a head start. Access to this extensive library allows them to dive straight into the creative process without the initial hurdle of hunting for the right sounds.”

Both professional and beginner producers often ask themselves the burning question: “What is that sound?” With Splice’s catalog at their fingertips, educators can teach active listening and the art of sound selection across various genres, styles, and applications.

“Sound selection is a crucial skill in music production, and Splice makes this learning process engaging and interactive,” writes Edwards. “They then listen to elements of a song they admire—for example, the kick drum, and use Splice to find a similar-sounding kick drum. With countless options at their disposal, this exercise becomes a fun treasure hunt, honing their ability to discern and develop their own taste for sounds for their tracks.”

“So far, I have been using Splice for breakcore as that’s the main genre I’m focusing on. It really has everything I need. It’s actually helpful.”

Splice’s catalog is meticulously organized by instruments, genres, and styles, with each loop labeled with tempo and key information to streamline the workflow for producers. Create provides on-demand inspiration with real-time transposition and tempo changes, offering a user-friendly way to audition sounds together and serving as a valuable tool for discussions on music theory.

“A less conventional way we use Splice in our classroom is when introducing scales and chords; music theory can be intimidating, but Splice helps us make it accessible and practical,” Edwards explains. “We encourage our students to select a loop from Splice that is labeled in a specific key, say A minor, and then use a MIDI instrument in FL Studio to build complementary melodies or basslines around that loop. By coming up with compatible melodies and chords that correspond to the key, they gain hands-on experience with music theory in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.”

In the early stages of learning music production, it is crucial that technology serves as a vehicle for creative ideas rather than a barrier. Any hurdle can derail the creative process, so it’s important for students to stay inspired with user-friendly tools. Splice Bridge enables students to hear loops in context within their current projects in the DAW, making the process more streamlined and inspirational than ever.

“Now that I have used Splice, it is nice to use when coming up with ideas of beats. I believe that it helps me think outside the box.”
—Chiyo, age 16

“One of the most exciting aspects of using Splice in our program is how it sparks creativity,” writes Edwards. “Incorporating Splice Bridge allows our students to get their ideas flowing much faster, which is crucial when they’re first building the confidence to produce music. The immediate access to a wide array of sounds and loops helps them overcome creative blocks and encourages them to experiment with less apprehension.”

“Splice has become an invaluable tool in our educational toolkit at FamFrequency Productions,” Edwards concludes. “It bridges the gap between learning and creating, making the process of music production accessible, enjoyable, and highly effective for our students. By providing them with the resources they need to succeed, Splice plays a pivotal role in helping us nurture the next generation of music professionals.”

Splice is enabling a new generation of creators to realize the lifelong power of making music. Armed with an enormous library of samples and sounds and powerful creative tools, these students will be unstoppable.

Last year, Splice introduced its inaugural student discount program, Splice for Students. As we have connected with music educators worldwide, the demand for Splice has become evident, with many viewing it as an integral part of modern music creation. Educators are passionate about providing students with the latest professional tools and concepts, and they are inspired by ethically-sourced, human-made sounds and responsible AI technology. Splice is an excellent resource for teaching music production, sampling, sound design, arranging, music for visual media, and songwriting. This enthusiasm has propelled us into the next phase of Splice Education.
