How do you go from making beats for yourself and your friends to critically acclaimed collaborations with Big Sean, Young Thug, A$AP Ferg and Elton John? Easy. You focus on the sounds. You take the kicks, 808s, vocal hooks, claps, snares, hats, and other trappings of trap, and you twist them into hazy but hard beats that feel like they came from a half-remembered dream.

This is what Stelios Phili did. Though he’s only been on our radar since 2013, his beats are iconic: his legacy is locked into some of raps greatest tracks. The New York Times described one of his compositions as “full of transfixing slo-mo production… somewhere between modern-day Internet-rap sparseness and the hard, murky slap of mid-1990s New York street rap.” Even more defining are the way he uses these swaggering syncopated sizzlers to deftly play off the unusual vocal cadences of his collaborators. When you hear those tipsy hi-hats stutter across your speakers, you know it’s Stelios. That’s no simple feat.
