We spoke to the creator of this pack, YNZ, a Turkish producer, sound designer, and DJ, about how he produced this collection and some of his favorite characteristics woven throughout it. He shared, “I created this pack to help me and other musicians shape their ideas with different sounds and textures. The majority of the sounds, especially the melodics, can be used to create different genres of music too.”
To craft this pack, YNZ used the sounds around him from simple items on his desk to unique instruments his friends brought from abroad. “Using and manipulating sounds around me to create this pack was a pure joy,” he reflected. Adding, “My whole thinking activity was re-arranged. Instead of just hearing, I was actively listening to my surroundings and trying to catch ideas from everywhere.”
He also included various past recordings processed as new sounds. “The sounds feel both inspiring and familiar at the same time and I think this is a special feature,” he explained. He continued, “As a musician, I'm always in search of new fresh sounds to structure my music. I see sounds as the paints of a painter. You can use them directly or mix them with other paints to make a different color.”
Digging into the specifics, some of the instruments found in this pack include cello, guitar, synths, percussion, and woodwinds. Whether or not you recognize them, you'll also hear pots, pans, bottles, park ambiances, and different rooms and places. As for technique, YNZ shared that the most notable was automating volume or filter by using peak controllers. "This way, I was able to create rhythmic patterns out of sustained sounds with ease. You just need to find one good groove and a sustained sound," he told us.
For inspiration, YNZ likes to look outside the realm of music. He explained, "At that time, I was watching David Lynch’s Masterclass and he was talking about the concept of 'Catching Ideas'. The whole pack created itself with this concept. I don’t try to pull influence from music relevant to the packs I’m working on. Instead, I get inspired by the techniques of other producers like Dubmatix, Decap, Ian Kirkpatrick, and Tipper.
Maintaining a dark, moody vibe throughout the pack, its general purpose is to be used in soulful dubstep productions. However, creators can use these sounds to make cinematic arrangements, game sounds, ad music, hip hop beats, and beyond. That's up to you. No matter what, it'll bring the darkness to your next project.
YNZ provided some technical tips to get you started with these sounds. He said, "Throwing samples into a sampler can immediately increase the possibilities. Combining different sounds as layers might be a good trick too. Putting sounds into a granulizer can open a new world of possibilities while keeping the sonic palette similar. The possibilities are always endless. I want to encourage creators to try different things and techniques with these sounds. I have found that that’s the first step of being new and innovative. Use that free plug-in you promised yourself to try but never used. Twist every knob of it and record what it is doing to your sounds simultaneously. This way it is not possible to miss any happy accidents. Once you leave your comfort zone, you let happy accidents happen and fresh ideas can start to flourish from everywhere."
