This pack is special on so many levels. For one, it was performed by some of the most well-known musicians in Senegal, and not just anyone can play one of these sacred instruments. Trust has to be earned. They must be handled and played with reverence. Instruments are not mass-produced in Senegal. They’re hand-built with great care using gifts from nature, and therefore must be treated with respect.
Pape Armand Boye said, “Because spirituality plays such a strong role in the life of Africans, meditation is omnipresent in African civilizations. Since the beginning of time, with the help of music, Africans have projected themselves into higher metaphysical states through which they access and traverse doors opened by instruments. As a result, not everyone is permitted to play these instruments.”
Adding, “To this day there are specific rites and traditions that must be respected prior to harvesting the materials for, or executing, the construction of an African instrument. The relationship between the musical world and the metaphysical world is one we approach with respect and trepidation.”
