From island to island

Each with its own long and textured history, every one of the genres that influenced this pack should be researched and celebrated. They’re each synthesis of African, European, Indian, and Indigenous influences, largely created by descendants of African slaves along with contributions from other communities, such as Indo-Caribbean music.

The historical story of the Caribbean is one of violence and colonization. With each island under control by a different European power and the import of slaves, the Caribbean culture splintered, creating different subtle cultural nuances from island to island. This island-specific culture also informs the music of the Caribbean. Every island has its distinct musical styles, all inspired, to one degree or another, by the music brought over from the African slaves.

Of course, with time, these genres have influenced one another, lending rhythms, melodies, and instruments to one another. This pack is an amalgamation that pays homage to the perseverance of the Caribbean peoples. Despite its troubling history, the Caribbean islands have come to represent warm smiles, gracious hospitality, and vibrant communities. Created in the winter months with eyes on springtime, we hope these sounds bring you a little sunshine.
