Flutopia: Bamboo Flutes

Featured story

Bamboo flutes bring life to modern beats

Of ancient origin, bamboo flutes lend an unmatched earthy feeling to any beat. They were played thousands of years ago across China, Egypt, the Middle East, and Europe - as far back as 433 BC in China alone. In India, the Hindu God Lord Krishna is traditionally considered a master of the bamboo flute. With a rich and textured history, the unique simplicity of these instruments produces sounds ranging from meditative to lively, adding a special rarity to your beats.

Not only are they made in only one key, but the type of bamboo used to make these flutes impacts the quality and style of sound they produce. Such variants and limitations have driven Anders Bostrom to become a flute chameleon. Originally from Sweden, he’s been collecting flutes from around the world for years. He’s played in several Broadway shows including the Lion King, Amazing Grace, and Shrek the Musical, among others.

He brought his experience and passion for these wild instruments to the Splice Originals Flutopia pack, playing in traditional folk song styles including the Ragga style from India. With a Shure SM7 through Neve 1073 preamps, we recorded bansuri flutes from India, dizi flutes from China, and bamboo flutes from Arabia for this pack.
