Spencer Zahn is a multi-instrumentalist based out of New York and has teamed up with Splice to create sample pack for the brand new label, Signal Path. Spencer focused on making samples with an atmospheric vibe creating a sense of openness to fuel creativity. Splice had the opportunity to sit down with Spencer and talk about his sound, some of his inspirations, and the process of creating this vibey synth sample pack.
How Would You Describe Your Sound?
I would describe my sound as an open, spacious sound. I like analog instruments, and I like having the air and sound of the room within a recording, whether it's with an electronic instrument or an acoustic instrument. It's important for me to capture the sound of a room, because it adds to the snapshot of the recording, captures the time and the atmosphere and the performers, and it brings added life to the song.
What Can People Expect to Hear in this Sample Pack?
There will be a variety of electronic instruments in this pack. In particular, the Moog Rogue, one of my favorites. It was the first and only synthesizer I had for a long time.
What was the Inspiration Behind this Pack?
The inspiration behind this pack is exploring new sound with the Moog Rogue, and then also creating a hybrid instrument out of some of my favorite digital synthesizers to create this new kind of nostalgia of 90s sounds.
Can you go into Your Process of Creating Samples?
We made some unique choices when creating this (sample) pack in terms of how it was recorded. We have the direct signal from the instrument itself going through a variety of pedals. And then we have parallel chains of compressed signal, stereo signal going to the EMT plate, another signal going to the tape echo. And it was to capture the sound of this studio and to bring these instruments an additional layer of texture.
