Lenno's Nu Disco: Bringing Vintage Vibes to the Contemporary Scene

Lenno is a Finnish producer, songwriter and DJ who spends every day in his studio filled with old synths and guitars. Amassing 150 million+ streams on Spotify alone, Lenno has crafted a unique blend of dance music, combining disco, French house and funk with pop-tinged melodics and innovative production.

Lenno sat down with Splice for an exclusive interview around the inspiration and process behind his Nu Disco sample pack for Dropgun Samples.

Splice: Tell us about yourself – What led you to production and creating samples?

Lenno: I got into music production at 10 years old with GarageBand back in 2005. Growing up, I was constantly moving between different musical worlds – playing guitar in a metal band, producing electronic music at home, and learning funk and soul with my guitar teacher. While dabbling at all these different genres, I found that combining them created something unique. That's what pushed me to start creating my own sounds from scratch. Now my studio is filled with different tools to capture these combinations - from old analog synths to guitars through boutique pedals - all aimed at creating tones you can't find anywhere else.

Splice: What inspired the sounds included in this sample pack?

Lenno: A lot of my process starts with recreating vintage sounds that I can then resample and transform into something contemporary. I spend time studying the arrangements and grooves of old records, finding specific elements that could work in a modern context. Working with Olivera was also a huge influence - her powerful vocals and songwriting pushed me to develop more complex and layered musical parts to match the depth of her contributions.

Splice: What do you hope the Splice community will do with these sounds?

Lenno: Take these sounds into completely unexpected territory! I'm most inspired when producers break genre boundaries – imagine these disco-style sounds showing up in a hard-hitting reggaeton track or getting chopped and pitched in a trap beat. I created these with one vision, but I'm excited to hear how producers will transform them into something I never could have imagined.

Splice: Do you have any advice for other musicians who are striving to move into the world of sample creation?

Lenno: Focus on creating sounds with real character – everybody already has access to plenty of clean, pristine VSTs. What sets you apart is making sounds that breathe and have personality, whether that's through analog gear, creative processing, or unique recording techniques. And don't forget the power of collaboration – working with talented musicians will always bring unexpected elements to your sound that you couldn't achieve alone.

Are Splice sounds royalty-free?

Yes, every single sample on Splice is 100% royalty free, meaning they're free to use, even for commercial use. You can download samples on Splice, then make and release original music with those samples, and you don't owe Splice (or anyone else) any more than your subscription fee, even if your track goes viral.

Can I use Splice sounds for commercial use?

Yes. In fact, we can even supply you with documentation in case you ever need to prove that your music is royalty-free and properly licensed. The license for sounds you download from Splice Sounds permits use for commercial and non-commercial purposes so long as you remain in compliance with our Terms of Use.

Is my DAW supported?

Splice Sounds works with any DAW. Download samples and add them directly to your projects using the Splice Sounds Plugin (beta) or the Desktop App. All purchased samples are downloaded locally to your machine in .wav format.

How do Sounds credits work?

Use credits to download your favorite samples, loops, one-shots, presets, MIDI & more. All samples are one credit each. MIDI patterns and presets use up to three credits each. Unused credits automatically roll over to the next month. Keep everything you download, even if you cancel.
