How Gospel Choirs Cultivate Community: Then & Now

Gospel music and the Black church in America share a deep, intertwined history rooted in the African American experience, spirituality, and the struggle for equality. From the early 1900s to today, Gospel has spread from the church into many parts of the music industry, blending in with blues, jazz, and hymns with powerful vocals and emotional depth, always bringing a rich sense of community and belonging.

For our Sound Doctrine label Splice traveled to cities across the US to record and interview contemporary artists like Pastor Edward ‘Busta’ Fields, JP Heath, and Dana Sorey, who carry the torch from a long lineage of historic gospel pioneers. This video above goes behind the scenes into how these phenomenal sample packs were created and gives a taste of these artists' perspectives on how the tradition of Gospel music fosters community across the country.
