A little over a year after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021 to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts down its servers and it's not available for download through app marketplaces.

Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and the changes to daily life that it's brought with it. The studio stated that Minecraft Earth was built around collaborative play and free movement. Mojang like Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible to players at home. The changes weren't enough, however.

After many exciting adventures, we've made the difficult decision to close Minecraft Minecraft Earth in June 2021. We are grateful for your help. The final build today contains a variety of changes to make the final months as fun as we can.

- -

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) January 5 2021. If there's a silver lining to this day's news it's that Mojang plans to end Minecraft Earth with style. The studio has released one final update to Minecraft Earth, which it claims contains changes "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth as fun as it can be." Among other tweaks, the update does away of real-money transactions and dramatically reduces the time it will take for players to craft and construct things within the game. The update also gives players a chance to see all the content that Mojang was working on prior to the announcement today. The studio stated that they are hoping that the changes will allow players to explore, create, and share more while staying safe in their homes.

When June 30th arrives and expires, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. If you've spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the duration of the game, you'll receive an account token that allows you to download the Bedrock edition of Minecraft on your mobile device. Minecraft Server More information about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.

It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. The company had high hopes for the game when it first showcased at WWDC 2019. It's not a great sign for consumer AR applications in the future that Minecraft Earth was unable to survive the pandemic with all of Microsoft’s resources.

Mojang has stated that they're forever grateful for the amazing talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy choice, and we're doing all we can to make sure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
