{"id":7004,"date":"2019-10-07T17:37:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T21:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/?p=7004"},"modified":"2024-08-06T10:34:15","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T14:34:15","slug":"ebonie-smith-music-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/ebonie-smith-music-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebonie Smith on what Hamilton and music production have in common"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ebonie Smith is a renowned music producer, audio engineer, and singer-songwriter based in New York City.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s also the founder and president of <a href=\"http:\/\/genderamplified.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gender Amplified, Inc.<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that supports and celebrates women and girls in music production, and she has worked on everything from Janelle Mon\u00e1e tracks to the cast album of <em>Hamilton <\/em>as an in-house engineer at Atlantic Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 80px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/1kCHru7uhxBUdzkm4gzRQc?si=C5Gd9nyhSWOV5s4KQ3yV3g\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she dropped by our studio, Smith used the award-winning Broadway show as an analogy for her approach to music production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you pay all that money to see <em>Hamilton<\/em>, and you get in the theater and there&#8217;s no lights, no costumes, no dancing, no orchestration, and no set design&#8230; If it&#8217;s literally just someone up there reading the script, I think you would feel very cheated\u2014and you would be very right,&#8221; Smith notes. &#8220;The <em>production<\/em> is what makes the product.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So is good production everything? To Smith, that doesn&#8217;t seem to be the case either. &#8220;To a producer, the script is kind of like a great song,&#8221; she states. &#8220;The script of <em>Hamilton&nbsp;<\/em>doesn&#8217;t stop being great because it doesn&#8217;t have production\u2014the script is still incredible, and a great song is like that. When you have a great song, its lyrics and melodies tug at the heartstrings, and the production around these is what makes it pleasant to listen to. So, production has to be thought of in a theatrical way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking of production theatrically requires us to ask ourselves questions as we work. Though it&#8217;s a non-exhaustive list, Smith challenges us to consider the following: How are we elevating a song? How are we bringing out the arrangement?
