In this video tutorial, we\u2019re going to explore how different features in <a href=\"https:\/\/sounds.splice.com\/ableton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ableton,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plans\/studio-pro\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studio Pro<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plans\/ableton-live\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Logic Pro X<\/a> can be used to help you create interesting chord progressions, even if you\u2019re not virtuoso on the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"How to write MIDI chord progressions if you don&#039;t play keys (Ableton\/Studio One\/Logic)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5dwopK3s4I8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve highlighted some key tips from the video below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating chord progressions in Ableton 10<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We created a device that you can use for this one &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Minor-Chords.adg_.zip\">you can download it here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started, load a chord device on a MIDI track along with a keyboard instrument (we&#8217;re using the <strong>Ableton Grand Piano<\/strong> for our demonstration).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, set the chord device\u2019s <strong>Shift<\/strong> parameters to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shift<\/strong> <strong>1<\/strong>: +3 st<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shift 2<\/strong>: +7 st<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shift 3<\/strong>: +10 st<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shift 4<\/strong>: + 14 st<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This will create a minor 9th chord based off the single note you play on the keyboard. The next step is to make sure all of the notes are in the same key. To do this, add a scale device &#8211; I\u2019d recommend using the<strong> C Minor<\/strong> preset. Next, go to the <strong>Browser<\/strong> on the right-hand side and go to <strong>Instruments<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Note FX<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Chorder<\/strong>. The Chorder device will automatically create chords based off the root note you play. You can program each individual note to play any chord shape, which means you can achieve some great-sounding chords using the built-in presets. Then, switch the instrument to <strong>External Instrument<\/strong>. Finally, arm the original track that contains the instrument and start recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t see IAC Driver Bus 1, go to <strong>Spotlight<\/strong>, search <strong>MIDI Setup<\/strong>, and open the <strong>MIDI<\/strong> window.
