In this installment of <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/tag\/one-shots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>One Shots<\/em><\/a>, let\u2019s explore \u201cAaaah! Many of the sounds incorporated other Roland products, such as 808 kicks and 909 percussion. Amongst the piano stabs, bass loops, and chord progressions included were a series of vocal one shots &#8211; including this one.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this sample so prevalent in hip hop music? Producer Zaytoven has used it in a number of his tracks, including cuts by Migos. \u201cIf you listen to the music that I&#8217;ve been producing over the years, I kind of have a sound,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/2018\/08\/this-sound-is-all-over-hip-hop-today-comes-from-unexpected-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he told Complex in 2018.<\/a> \u201cLike a signature sound. That was just one of the beats where I was just like, \u2018Oh, I need to throw something else in it. Let me throw the \u2018Aaaah!\u2019 in there.\u2019 I just started using it however I felt it on the beat.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we explore a few more tracks that feature the iconic sound.<\/p>\n<h2>Nelly&#8217;s \u201cDilemma (feat. Kelly Rowland)\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Nelly - Dilemma (Official Music Video) ft. Kelly Rowland\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8WYHDfJDPDc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the earliest and most well-known instances of the sound, the \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample can be heard on the right channel throughout the track. It serves as a nice, catchy element that&#8217;s just as recognizable as the main vocal hook. Producer Ryan Bowser claims that the sample was re-recorded and not from the module, but hear it for yourself &#8211; it sounds pretty close.<\/p>\n<h2>Travis Scott&#8217;s \u201c3005 (feat. Future &amp; 2 Chainz)\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"3500\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3qNaoLgHU94?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Travis Scott\u2019s productions are known for his vocal ad-libs; listen to any song and hear one shots of him shouting everything from \u201calright\u201d to \u201cya!\u201d to \u201cit\u2019s lit.\u201d The \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample serves a similar purpose, existing as an additional sound that gives the track some variation and texture. Many of Scott\u2019s ad-libs land on the song\u2019s downbeats, and the placement of the &#8220;Aaaah&#8221; sample is no different &#8211; hear it pitched down at the 0:30 mark and throughout the track.<\/p>\n<h2>Nicki Minaj&#8217;s \u201cWant Some More (feat. Jeremih)\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Want Some More\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-XcQNTB2Z7A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Produced by Zaytoven, Metro Boomin\u2019, and Hitmaka, Nicki Minaj\u2019s \u201cWant Some More\u201d uses the \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample as a melodic texture. The sound is pitched to a Bb, and goes up one semitone to B throughout the song. Considering Zaytoven considers the sound to be one of his signatures, it makes sense that it\u2019d serve as a central piece to this track.<\/p>\n<h2>TWICE\u2019s \u201cFANCY\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"TWICE &quot;FANCY&quot; M\/V\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kOHB85vDuow?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s fascinating about K-pop productions is their ability to weave seemingly disparate genres such as pop, trap, future bass, EDM, R&amp;B, and more into a cohesive, new sound. This genre-fusing cut by TWICE includes the \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample as an homage to the trap music that precedes it &#8211; hear it at 0:05 mark.<\/p>\n<h2>Future&#8217;s \u201cUsed to This (feat. Drake)\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Future - Used to This (Official Music Video) ft. Drake\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SZDmuHSqwtg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another Zaytoven production (co-produced by StepBfly and Cassius Jay), Future&#8217;s &#8220;Used to This (feat. Drake)&#8221; also places the \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample on the downbeat, pitched a few semitones higher than other examples. Listen closely &#8211; a lot of the low frequencies have been removed to make room for instruments like the piano and synth.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAaaah!\u201d sample works in a number of contexts due to its flexibility. It can be pitched to the key of the song and works as an additional element that\u2019s neither melodic or percussive, acting as a nice decorative piece that doesn\u2019t distract from the lead vocals.
