Woo!\u201d vocal break in the middle of the track, courtesy of producer and arranger James Brown, is sampled by everyone from Kanye West to Carly Rae Jepsen to Run the Jewels. The one drum break in the middle, performed by John \u201cJabo\u201d Starks, includes vocal yells from Bobby Byrd (who yells, \u201cYeah!\u201d) and Brown (who yells, \u201cWoo!\u201d). The break (heard at 1:21 in the song) has been sampled thousands of times, thanks in no small part to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Various-Ultimate-Breaks-Beats\/master\/287328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its inclusion on &#8220;Ultimate Beats and Breaks Volume 16.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Think (About It)\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vCByeJsq65M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Whether it be the snare sound, the tambourine loop, the vocal stab, or any other bits of Lyn Collins\u2019 performance, \u201cThink (About It)\u201d contains some of the most important samples in hip hop, dance, and pop production history. Read on in this first entry of <em>One Shots<\/em>, a series where we break down music\u2019s most iconic samples.<\/p>\n<h2>Rob Base &amp; DJ EZ Rock &#8211; &#8220;It Takes Two&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Rob Base &amp; DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/phOW-CZJWT0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Possibly the most well-known use of the sample, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock\u2019s hip hop classic went Platinum in the 90s. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/09\/18\/648850102\/the-voice-behind-one-of-hip-hops-most-famous-hooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaking to NPR,<\/a> Rob Base said, \u201cFirst, we picked out the breakbeat&#8230; but then when I listened to the whole song, I was like, &#8216;Yo, this song is dope.\u2019\u201d Eventually, they ended up using a line from \u201cThink (About It)\u201d as the main vocal hook as well, but asked vocalist Rhonda Paris to re-record it for the final mix.<\/p>\n<h2>Kanye West &#8211; &#8220;So Appalled&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"So Appalled\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0o9HzQ3zAcE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kanye\u2019s masterpiece <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy<\/em>, like all of his albums, is known for its daring sampling choices. His opus lifts sounds from acts ranging all the way from Bon Iver to Aphex Twin. Two songs off the record sample \u201cThink (About It),\u201d albeit sourcing from different elements of the song. &#8220;So Appalled&#8221; lifts the vocal \u201cWoo!,\u201d pitching it up a few semitones, distorting it, and shortening the transients so that the vocal is isolated. You can hear it around the 0:22 mark.<\/p>\n<h2>Kanye West &#8211; &#8220;Lost In The World&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Kanye West - Lost In The World (Explicit) ft. Bon Iver\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ofaRvNOV4SI?start=58&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLost In The World\u201d is a little more subtle in its interpolation, as the tambourines from the break are looped once the chorus drops (at around the 1 minute mark).<\/p>\n<h2>Janet Jackson &#8211; &#8220;Alright&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Alright\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/89aZ7wAehkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlright\u201d is a track off <em>Janet Jackson\u2019s<\/em> <em>Rhythm Nation<\/em> <em>1814<\/em> that was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. New jack swing is known for marrying the swing of hip hop breakbeats (usually chopped up on an E-MU SP-1200 sampler) with the sounds of drum machines (like the TR-808), and \u201cAlright\u201d is a classic of the genre. Listen to how the \u201cYeah! Woo!\u201d vocal sample from \u201cThink (About It)\u201d is woven throughout the song\u2019s drum loop.<\/p>\n<h2>Mike Greene &#8211; &#8220;Bill Nye: The Science Guy&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Bill Nye: The Science Guy [Original Intro] \u1d34\u1d30\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UtVJdPfm0F8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A childhood staple for many, <em>Bill Nye the Science Guy<\/em> was an iconic show that broke down complex and confusing scientific concepts to an audience of youth. Perhaps a bit more straightforward was the upbeat house track created for the theme song, with its memorable \u201cBill! Bill! Bill!\u201d chant. You can hear the \u201cYeah! Woo!\u201d sample faintly throughout the drum break.<\/p>\n<h2>Carly Rae Jepsen &#8211; &#8220;I Didn\u2019t Just Come Here to Dance&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"I Didn\u2019t Just Come Here To Dance\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fa28rTufUuI?start=143&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The undisputed queen of pop had plenty of throwback sounds on her third studio album, <em>Emotion<\/em>. In &#8220;I Didn&#8217;t Just Come HEre to Dance,&#8221; interpolations of \u201cThink (About It)\u201d can be heard at around the 2:25 mark. She also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UPIuzNv-TyI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actually covered the aforementioned &#8220;It Takes Two&#8221; with Lil Yachty and Mike WiLL Made it.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Run the Jewels &#8211; &#8220;Call Ticketron&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Run The Jewels - Call Ticketron | From The RTJ3 Album\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eaJmgMuYNjc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Processed through a heavy slap delay and layered with a persistent drum machine groove, &#8220;Call Ticketron&#8221; (produced by Run the Jewels member EL-P) makes great use of the \u201cYeah! Woo!\u201d sample to give the track its bump.<\/p>\n<h2>A$AP Ferg &#8211; &#8220;Hungry Ham ft. Skrillex, Crystal Caines&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"A$AP Ferg - Hungry Ham (Audio) ft. Skrillex, Crystal Caines\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z31Gaczp9VU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The dark and dissonant beat behind A$AP Ferg\u2019s hard-hitting \u201cHungry Ham\u201d uses the iconic \u201cYeah! Woo!\u201d sample as well &#8211; listen closely to the vocal chops (starting at around the 0:05 mark).<\/p>\n<h2>N.W.A. &#8211; &#8220;Appetite for Destruction&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Appetite For Destruction\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R1dXVy3Mf7Y?start=55&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This N.W.A. cut, produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, is one of the few to sample Lyn Collins&#8217; voice. Check out how the sample is chopped around the 0:55 mark.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Street Fighter III: New Generation<\/em> &#8211; &#8220;Jazzy NYC (Underground Edit)&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Street Fighter III: New Generation (D1;T5) JAZZY NYC (underground edit) ~Stage New York 1~\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1yuBjyIouSs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Street Fighter III: New Generation<\/em> was released in 1997, with a soundtrack composed by Hideki Okugawa. Incorporating elements of house, jungle, drum &amp; bass, and hip hop, its incorporation of \u201cThink (About It)\u201d feels like a natural fit. Listen to how the \u201cYeah!
