{"id":5971,"date":"2019-03-02T17:36:38","date_gmt":"2019-03-02T22:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/?p=5971"},"modified":"2019-08-06T15:02:30","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T19:02:30","slug":"creator-insights-nova-wav","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/creator-insights-nova-wav\/","title":{"rendered":"Creator Insights: NOVA Wav"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>In early 2019, Splice hosted its first ever gathering of creators, featuring one-on-one sessions, Q&amp;As, and panel discussions.<\/h1>\n<p>For one of our panel discussions, we spoke to NOVA Wav, a Grammy Award-winning production team comprised of Denisia &#8220;Blu June&#8221; Andrews and Brittany &#8220;Chi&#8221; Coney. They\u2019ve produced for the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonc\u00e9, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Kehlani, and countless others.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Beyonce and Jay-Z producers NOVA Wav on collaboration | Creator Insights: NOVA Wav\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NkYmzroAoes?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few insights from their panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How \u201cLove Happy\u201d by the Carters (Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z) came to life:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember sitting down with Jay-Z, and he played us a song a couple months before we actually went out to record. And he was like, &#8216;You know, I like the track,&#8217; but they only had [this] sample. So he was like, \u2018I like the track but there&#8217;s something about it that just doesn&#8217;t move.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So we literally went and looked up hi-hat loops that had like a 3\/4-type-of-groove to them. And I believe the hi-hat loop came from the Mdl pack, if I&#8217;m not mistaken. And we literally took the hi-hat loop, but like chopped it in different ways, so it was a little bit different. We then added a plugin called HalfTime to it, so it did like these little weird things and dadada &#8211; it became \u2018Love Happy\u2019 on the <em>Everything is Love<\/em> album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advice for musicians going into the industry:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust kind of know why you&#8217;re doing what you&#8217;re doing. I think that a lot of people go into music because, \u2018Oh, you know, I want to be popular or I want to make a lot of money.\u2019 I think just kind of have a vision and know why you&#8217;re doing it. Then, surround yourself with people who have the same vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visibility in the music industry:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we do need more visibility &#8211; just being women of color, just being two women as a production and songwriting team &#8211; that&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t see a lot. So I just think that we definitely need more visibility in terms of being able to inspire young women.
