It\u2019s obvious that Post Malone brings his incredible talent to the record, but what makes the track itself a hit? Let\u2019s take a look at three core production elements that make &#8220;rockstar (feat. 21 Savage)&#8221; an instant classic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Post Malone - rockstar ft. 21 Savage (Official Audio)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4GFAZBKZVJY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To break down and shed light on each of these elements, I&#8217;ve produced a recreation of the instrumental below. Splice the Ableton project to experiment with the beat yourself &#8211; the song is at 160 BPM and in the key of G minor.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. The drums<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Producers Tank God and Louis Bell took a less-is-more approach on the drums, especially with the hi hats. There are only four main components in this beat: a kick, snare, closed hats, and an open hat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5891 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04.png\" alt=\"hits-decoded-post-malone-21-savage-rockstar-MIDI\" width=\"1244\" height=\"635\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04.png 1244w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04-400x204.png 400w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04-1024x523.png 1024w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04-355x181.png 355w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_04-768x392.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1244px) 100vw, 1244px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1244px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1244\/635;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most challenging part of recreating the drums was getting the panning for the closed hi hat right. There are some really nice panning choices that make the hats feel bigger without getting too complicated or busy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5893 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02.png\" alt=\"hits-decoded-post-malone-21-savage-rockstar-panning-automation\" width=\"1380\" height=\"483\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02.png 1380w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02-400x140.png 400w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02-1024x358.png 1024w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02-355x124.png 355w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_02-768x269.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1380px) 100vw, 1380px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1380px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1380\/483;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the kick and snare patterns are pretty standard, the sound design is what really gets the track bouncing. To recreate the drums, I used samples from these packs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/splice\/kreaem-organic-drumkit-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>kreaem&#8217;s &#8220;Organic Hip Hop Drumkit Vol. 2&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/splice\/bighead-sample-pack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bighead&#8217;s &#8220;Bighead Sample Pack&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/capsun-proaudio\/4-20-the-smokers-kit-vol-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Capsun ProAudio&#8217;s &#8220;The Smokers Kit Vol. 2&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. The 808<\/h2>\n<p>The 808 used in &#8220;rockstar&#8221; is pretty clean &#8211; I ended up chopping the first hit from <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/samples\/56670741de1481e3903d1f8e6d46a077b80f3fba3dd0cd92fc8f707f51d4d745\/capsun-proaudio-hip-hop-bass-synth-sub-trap-sample\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this 808 loop<\/a> by Capsun ProAudio. Next, I softened the attack and added an <strong>Overdrive<\/strong>\u00a0device to add more texture. Finally, I added an <strong>EQ Eight<\/strong> to sculpt and attenuate the higher harmonics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5894 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01.png\" alt=\"hits-decoded-post-malone-21-savage-rockstar-eq\" width=\"1707\" height=\"301\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01.png 1707w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01-400x71.png 400w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01-1024x181.png 1024w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01-355x63.png 355w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01-768x135.png 768w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image_01-1536x271.png 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1707px) 100vw, 1707px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1707px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1707\/301;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 808 moves from the tonic G up to Bb, then down to Eb. The melodic elements<\/h2>\n<p>The melodic elements of &#8220;rockstar&#8221; are what really take this track to the next level. There&#8217;s an undeniable sense of regality, and the slightest changes carry the energy forward throughout the entire track. There are two main melodies (plus several other textural layers) that fit together beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>Recreating the melodic elements was the most difficult part of the entire process. For the intro lead sound (the blue clips below), I used an instance of <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plugins\/39137242-serum-2-au-by-xfer-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serum<\/a> to create the brassy synth sound heard throughout. There&#8217;s also a counter-melody (the green clips below) in a lower range that sounded like a reversed synth piano &#8211; I used Wavetable to create the patch, and then bounced the audio and reversed it.
