Let\u2019s take a look at three production choices that make \u201cShallow\u201d so powerful in the context of the film: the lyrics, instrumentation, and arrangement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPOILER ALERT: This piece discusses some of the plot of <em>A Star Is Born<\/em>. If you haven\u2019t seen it yet, please read on at your own discretion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper - Shallow (from A Star Is Born) (Official Music Video)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bo_efYhYU2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>1. Lyrics<\/h2>\n<p>Jack and Ally pose questions to each other in the first two verses, following a call-and-response pattern. Even at this early stage in their relationship, the two make profound insights into each other\u2019s deep-seated hopes and fears:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Are you happy in this modern world?<\/em><br \/><em>Or do you need more?<\/em><br \/><em>Is there somethin&#8217; else you&#8217;re searchin&#8217; for?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Aren&#8217;t you tired tryin&#8217; to fill that void?<\/em><br \/><em>Or do you need more?<\/em><br \/><em>Ain&#8217;t it hard keeping it so hardcore?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The repetition of this lyrical and melodic motif mirrors how the characters complement each other: as Ally tries to support Jack in his struggle with alcoholism, Jack uses his platform to propel her to stardom. Each character\u2019s struggle as alluded to in the song is reflected in the film\u2019s edits: when Jack sings, \u201cOr do you need more?,\u201d we see Ally taking out the trash from the kitchen where she works. When Ally sings the same line in the second verse, the camera is sharing a limo backseat with Jack as he escapes his adoring fans to steal a drink.<\/p>\n<p>Another notable lyrical motif emerges from the song\u2019s chorus:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I&#8217;m off the deep end, watch as I dive in<br \/>I&#8217;ll never meet the ground<br \/>Crash through the surface, where they can&#8217;t hurt us<br \/>We&#8217;re far from the shallow now<br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Double meanings abound here: \u201cfalling,\u201d \u201ccrash,\u201d \u201cmeet the ground,\u201d \u201cdive\u201d &#8211; all of these &#8216;downer&#8217; words could refer to one of the main themes of the film: falling in love and succumbing to personal demons. Even these smallest of lyrical choices are calculated to generate suspense by foreshadowing both stars\u2019 story arcs.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Instrumentation<\/h2>\n<p>The instrumentation choices in \u201cShallow\u201d are made specifically to complement the lyrical content and highlight the performers\u2019 voices. The first verse\u2019s arrangement is sparse; Jack\u2019s guitar and voice are the only sounds featured. This choice clearly highlights Jack\u2019s stardom, cementing his position as the established veteran artist.<\/p>\n<p>When Ally takes the stage for her verse, a few string and piano flourishes add some color, but the full band doesn\u2019t chime in until she croons a building bridge that\u2019s so natural that it could be improvised. Once the full duet is unveiled in the final chorus, the electric guitar and drum kit are playing unison stabs, accentuating the <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/how-to-create-vocal-harmonies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vocal harmonies<\/a> like fireworks going off at the stadium where Jack and Ally are performing.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no synth pad here filling out the arrangement, no drum samples or effects. Even the band remains restrained so that the powerful lyrical content and vocal counterpoint can shine. A less subtle arranger may have written a key change or blowout guitar solo, but that\u2019s not the point of the movie. The point is that we\u2019re seeing a star being born, and stars don\u2019t let themselves get upstaged by their lead guitarists.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Arrangement with the film edits<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s how Jay Cassidy, the editor of <em>A Star Is Born<\/em>, described the on-screen performance of \u201cShallow\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/10\/a-star-is-born-how-bradley-cooper-edited-lady-gaga-performances-of-shallow-and-ill-never-love-again-1202015586\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview with Indiewire<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShallow,\u201d Ally\u2019s breakout performance (and the Oscar frontrunner for Best Original Song), is \u201cstructured as a pied piper\u2019s call that draws Ally from the kitchen of the Biltmore to center stage of a large outdoor concert [shot at the Greek Theater], belting out the chorus&#8230; The first instrumental pieces were written and performed to allow the intercutting between her and Ramon\u2019s [Anthony Ramos] journey and flashes of the concert. Once they arrive, Jack\u2019s virtuosity disarms her to the point that when he suggests that she come join him on stage, she is near collapse.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt the end of the first verse of \u2018Shallow,\u2019 the camera stays on Ally and the audience watches her struggle and ultimately decide to join him. And the camera stays on her as she crosses the stage to the microphone just in time for her verse. The rest of the cutting is to see Jack as her biggest fan, encouraging her by mouthing lyrics while following Ally\u2019s growing confidence, building up to the reverse two-shot of them singing while looking at each other. It is as if the whole surroundings have receded \u2014 the band, the audience \u2014 and they are alone together. As the song ends and they come back to earth, all she can say is \u2018so many people.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The arrangement of \u201cShallow\u201d dovetails beautifully with the edits to the film, as noted by Cassidy. As Jack croons the first verse, directed at Ally, memories of Ally\u2019s blue-collar lifestyle show how Jack built Ally up, reinforcing her confidence and eventually inviting her onstage at the Greek to continue the ballad.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful two-part vocal harmony of the second half of the chorus (&#8220;<em>In the shallow, shallow\u2026&#8221;<\/em>) is accentuated by Cassidy\u2019s reverse two-shot edit. Here, finally, are two stars truly supporting each other, mirroring the film\u2019s storyline.<\/p>\n<p>The song ends on a slightly ominous note, however, as the last thing we hear is Jack strumming an Em chord.
