In my opinion, there\u2019s one more label that applies to him: he\u2019s the greatest producer of all time. I loved his latest album, <em>Ye<\/em>, and it will now be my distinct pleasure to break down 3 elements that define the album\u2019s strongest track, &#8220;Ghost Town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>1. Sample chops<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWith Ye back choppin,&#8217; the cars and the women come with options.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shirley Ann Lee &#8211; \u201cSomeday\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Someday\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3LMw4wYjo0o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In keeping with his theme of gospel and religious sample material, Kanye lifts the track&#8217;s intro from Shirley Ann Lee\u2019s &#8220;Someday,&#8221; giving it to PARTYNEXTDOOR for re-interpretation (more on that later). Although PARTYNEXTDOOR twists the lyrics around a bit, the original version of this recording highlights a very interesting parallel. Shirley Ann Lee stops singing and begins to engage in a conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3LMw4wYjo0o?t=39s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">39 seconds into the recording:<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cOr look, uh, have you thought that maybe, uh, we could use music for fill in on a lot of this?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Yeah, that-&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Uh, just do that and then let the music do something, then do that again, that&#8217;d be enough for a record.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Mhm.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;I mean, you only want two and a half minutes if you can get it, you know, three minutes maximum.&nbsp;So, if you consider that if you did that, just like you did there, and then let some music play a chorus of it and then you come over again and go out, that would be good enough.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Shirley-ann-lee-someday-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full lyrics are avaialable on Genius.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just as Kanye has distinguished himself by releasing \u201cunfinished\u201d or raw-sounding records, the end of this recording includes Lee talking with someone, perhaps a manager or A&amp;R, about how to finish the song. Could Kanye have taken inspiration for his forward-thinking release strategy from the past?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Royal Jesters &#8211; \u201cTake Me For A Little While\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Take Me For a Little While\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AKG0j29VtIg?start=7&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This sample, from Chicano soul outfit The Royal Jesters, gives \u201cGhost Town\u201d nearly all of its melodic content. The euphoric organ chops provide a dynamic bed for Kanye\u2019s characteristic distorted electric guitar leads, which have returned to prominence on his Wyoming beats.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Vocal features<\/h2>\n<p>Getting the best out of the artists you\u2019re collaborating with is part of being a great producer. This is, of course, a little easier when you can call up the greatest artists in the world and fly them out to Jackson Hole on a whim. Still, Kanye has a knack for evoking fantastic performances from his features, a talent he displays to the fullest on &#8220;Ghost Town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>070 Shake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cI put my hand on the stove to see if I still bleed<br>\n<\/em><em>And nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recent G.O.O.D. signee 070 Shake\u2019s verse\/outro might be the most memorable moment on the entire album. The entire second half of the arrangement is devoted to Shake\u2019s reflections on the concepts of pain and freedom, belted out over a sparsely arranged, marching drum beat. Whether or not your hand will actually bleed if you put it on the stove, however, remains a contentious issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PARTYNEXTDOOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cSomeday, someday, someday, <\/em><br>\n<em>I wanna lay down, like God did, Sunday\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The track opens with PARTYNEXTDOOR performing a loose, stream-of-consciousness riff, loosely based on the Shirley Ann Lee sample it follows. PARTYNEXTDOOR&#8217;s vocal doodling, fitting the casual, unfinished aesthetic of the album, provides a sense of vulnerability, as though the listener is in the studio with the vocalists listening to Kanye and the team bouncing ideas around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kid Cudi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to make you love me,<br>\n<\/em><em>But everything I try takes you further from me\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The chorus in &#8220;Ghost Town&#8221; consists of longtime Kanye collaborator\/prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Kid Cudi crooning a passage from The Royal Jesters record that comprises the majority of the instrumental\u2019s melodic content. It\u2019s difficult to discern exactly who&#8217;s the subject here, but <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/14692866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some of our friends at Genius have opined<\/a> (and I&#8217;m inclined to agree) that the hook is meant to be understood as coming from, and directed, at Kanye himself.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Lyrical content<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although Kanye\u2019s political antics have (once again) largely dominated public responses to his album, the most salient themes present across the record deal with more personal topics &#8211; depression, self-love, self-harm, acceptance, vulnerability, and free thought. Kanye is at his best when he\u2019s at his most intimate, when he\u2019s feeling empowered to share his inmost self. This means that his lyrics are contradictory at times, and it often gets the artist in hot water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cYears ahead but way behind<br>\n<\/em><em>I&#8217;m on one, two, three, four, five<br>\n<\/em><em>No half-truths, just naked minds<br>\n<\/em><em>Caught between space and time\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kanye\u2019s determination to embrace free thought informs the song\u2019s (and the entire album\u2019s) sensibilities. Specifically, critics and fans have been irritated with Kanye for releasing music that seems \u201cunfinished.\u201d They\u2019re right in a sense &#8211; both <em>Ye<\/em> and <em>Pablo<\/em> have featured literally unfinished tracks. Even Shake\u2019s part, regarded by many critics and fans as the highlight of the entire record, <a href=\"https:\/\/pigeonsandplanes.com\/interviews\/2018\/06\/070-shake-interview-kanye-west-ye-ghost-town\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was finished on the same day it came out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s the point &#8211; it ended up being the most affecting part of the whole thing! &#8220;Ghost Town&#8221; isn\u2019t successful because it\u2019s the most well-written or best-produced Kanye West song ever.
