He’s worked alongside everyone from Tiësto and Azealia Banks to *NSYNC and Britney Spears, and is widely known for his film score work on the Fast & Furious franchise. His album This Binary Universe put a 110-piece orchestra inside a glitch record written for 5.1 surround, and he’s often credited for inventing stutter editing—a rhythmic technique that became its own language, and one that makes its mark on Phoenix.

Phoenix represents BT’s third synth with Spitfire Audio, following Phobos and Polaris.

A guide to Spitfire Audio’s Phoenix

Phoenix features over 500 presets, six synthesis engines, 37 effects, and full MPE support. But, these numbers alone don’t explain why it matters to a composer—below is a look at what’s actually going on inside it.

Six synthesis engines inside every note

Phoenix isn’t six synths layered on top of each other. Rather, every single voice and every note you play runs through the following six synthesis engines at once, on one shared architecture and one signal path, all talking to each other:

Wavetable / spectral: The evolving, breathing tonal core of Phoenix.

FM: Ideal for bells, glass, metallic tones, aggressive textures, and complex harmonic content.

Sampler: BT’s private archive and some of Spitfire’s strangest source material.

FM transient: A dedicated two-operator FM engine that designs the attack of every note.

Subharmonic generator: Lower-octave tone generation that adds body, size, and weight.

Complex noise oscillator: Shaped, filtered, moving noise for air, breath, bow hair, hiss, and grit.

Cross-modulation and cross-synthesis

What makes Spitfire Audio’s Phoenix genuinely unique is that these engines are all actively modulating each other. BT describes it as “true cross-synthesis”—for composers, the practical result is that one patch can deliver tone, attack, low end, and air all at once, moving as a single instrument.

Stereo from the ground up

Most synths are mono at heart, with one signal generated and then widened at the output with chorus or some other spread. Meanwhile, Phoenix is stereo from the ground up—every voice has two independent synthesis chains, one for the left channel and one for the right. The result is a pad that surrounds the listener rather than sitting on the speakers, without collapsing into an out-of-phase mess.

Phase warping and the 3D render

Phoenix’s stereo wavetable engine does deep spectral warping. Phase warping changes how the oscillator reads through the waveform, speeding it up, slowing it down, and folding or mirroring parts of the cycle so the shape changes before the sound comes out.

All of this is visible in real time through a 3D render that draws the actual waveform being synthesized as it happens. It’s visually striking, but it’s also genuinely useful for understanding what’s happening to the wave as you push things further.

Six operators and 34 algorithms

Phoenix’s FM engine is a full six-operator design with 34 algorithms. Each operator is an oscillator; some are carriers (what you hear), and others are modulators (what bends the frequency to create new harmonics). The algorithm is the wiring diagram, defining what modulates what. Change the algorithm, and the six operators act like a completely different instrument.

Any sample can be an operator, and six operators times eight unison voices gives 48 oscillators stacked inside a single key press—all stereo, with full MPE. On an MPE controller, every finger gets its own expression, allowing your FM stack to swell, bend, brighten, or do whatever your keys do, all independently.

Primitives and the source recordings

BT built Phoenix around a concept called primitives—raw, unpolished source material designed to be pulled apart and re-imagined into something new. The sampler draws from BT’s 30-year private collection alongside curated selections from Spitfire’s most unusual sources: harsh brass flutter, quarter-tone clusters, sul tasto string textures, arctic sounds, and more.

The sampler has its own transient and noise engines, and the sample runs through everything else in Phoenix. An organic recording becomes something that still feels human, but could never come out of a real orchestra, and that zone is exactly where modern scores live.

Meta sequencers and the modulation matrix

Phoenix’s modulation system is built with the continuous movement of sound design for picture in mind:

Meta sequencers: Eight sequencers that are also simultaneously envelopes—each has four drawable stages with sections that can loop or play forward and backward.

Random generators: Four random generators with 636 hand-made rhythm patterns for controlling predictability and keeping long cues from sounding like looped instruments.

Modulation matrix: An unlimited matrix where sources feed synth engines, effects, and anything else.

The arpeggiator

Most arpeggiators play the same pattern every bar, but Phoenix’s arpeggiator rewrites itself with every pass, built on BT’s stutter edit-esque rhythmic language. Under the hood, there are two sequences per patch, each with its own probability; four stages of 128 hand-drawn steps are combined with per-stage play probability and eight scale modes that keep things musical.

The result never loops the same line twice, which is a significant advantage for underscore work, where a four-minute tension cue with a subtly evolving pulse can sound composed rather than copy-pasted.

37 effects

Phoenix’s 37 effects are all bespoke and studio-quality; each could arguably ship as its own product. Every effect has its own dedicated interface, and the modulation matrix can reach into all of them. The range spans from shimmering granular reverbs to lo-fi vinyl emulation.

Studio-quality presets

Last but not least, BT and Spitfire have built an extensive preset library that functions as a learning tool as much as a starting point. Pulling up a preset and reverse-engineering the signal path—tracing what’s going into what and why—is one of the most effective ways to understand what Phoenix is truly capable of.

Try Spitfire Audio’s Phoenix today

And there you have it! Six engines in every note, two synthesis chains in every voice, a six-operator FM engine stacking 48 oscillators on a single key press, BT’s entire private archive loaded into a sampler, an arpeggiator that never plays the same line twice, 37 effects, and so much more—as BT puts it, “Phoenix is made for people writing to picture at 3 a.m.”

What aspect of Phoenix are you most interested in trying out?
