In this article, we break down what made this track an instant chart-topper.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Shape of You\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/7qiZfU4dY1lWllzX7mPBI3?si=QD6pbn18TGCixXFQy8-l1w&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Slow tempo + minor key = #1 hit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Slower tempos and minor keys have been a trend in chart-topping songs for the past year, and Sheeran put this winning formula to use in &#8220;Shape of You.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the 12 songs that reached number 1 on the Billboard charts last year, from Drake\u2019s &#8220;One Dance&#8221; to Rihanna\u2019s &#8220;Work,&#8221; had tempos slower than 104 bpm. At 96 bpm, &#8220;Shape of You&#8221; proves that the shift to slower tempos is still trendy.<\/p>\n<p>Over half of the songs that made it to the Billboard Hot 100 songs in 2015 were written in major keys. However, seven of the 12 songs that made number 1 in 2016 were written in minor keys. Sheeran\u2019s latest hit, written in C# minor, follows in the footsteps of the many recent minor-key chart-toppers, including Adele\u2019s &#8220;Hello,&#8221; which took home &#8220;Song of the Year&#8221; at the Grammys.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. A dose of dancehall<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If &#8220;Shape of You&#8221; makes you want to dance &#8211; and we know that it does &#8211; it\u2019s because of that beat. And that beat probably sounds familiar. It comes from dancehall, a genre of Jamaican pop music from the 1970s, but it\u2019s been having a heyday on the international stage thanks to modern pop producers. Sia\u2019s &#8220;Cheap Thrills,&#8221; Drake\u2019s &#8220;One Dance,&#8221; Justin Bieber\u2019s &#8220;Sorry&#8221; and, of course, Ed Sheeran\u2019s &#8220;Shape of You&#8221; all follow the drum pattern characteristic of dancehall. Less is definitely more<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Minimalism is in. Just take a listen to Migos\u2019 &#8220;Bad and Boujee&#8221; and Bruno Mars\u2019 &#8220;That\u2019s What I Like,&#8221; currently numbers 2 and 3 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100, and you can immediately hear how light the instrumentation is.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for &#8220;Shape of You&#8221; &#8211; large sections of the song have only two or three instrument parts playing at the same time. We don\u2019t even get a kick drum until the first chorus, almost a minute into the song, and the bass doesn\u2019t come in until even later.<\/p>\n<p>However, the track still feels full. For the verses, the marimba fills up the low end, the guitar-tapping percussion fills up the high frequency spectrum, and Sheeran\u2019s vocals nicely occupy that all-important mid-range.
