{"id":35349,"date":"2025-04-16T14:15:33","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/?p=35349"},"modified":"2025-05-28T10:25:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T14:25:16","slug":"petal-supply-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/petal-supply-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the sample in Pok\u00e9mon&#8217;s &#8220;Pikkaan!&#8221;: A conversation with Petal Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Pikkaan!&#8221; is the infectious ending theme heard in the current <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> anime, <em>Pok\u00e9mon Horizons<\/em>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The track is crafted by Giga and TeddyLoid, two producers who are frequent collaborators and behind some of the biggest hits across J-pop, EDM, and vocaloid music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/1QidgC1vyuG6053IY5S4UG?si=18533b23cbb74e30\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What surprised music listeners\u2014and one artist in particular\u2014was the prominent inclusion of a sample crafted by Canadian producer, vocalist, and songwriter Petal Supply: <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/sample\/eb91ed5756a09c37cd90aeec79f07bafb3a3db05790de05b6461ef81a7717a79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hear the original sample on Splice Sounds here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Someone tagged me in an Instagram Story about it, and I had no clue what it said because it was all in Japanese,&#8221; Petal Supply tells us. &#8220;I thought maybe it was just a mashup or something, and that the visuals of Pok\u00e9mon dancing over it were unrelated at first. When I looked it up, I was so shocked to find that not only was it a real song by Giga and Teddyloid, but it was on the official Pok\u00e9mon YouTube channel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u3010\u516c\u5f0f\u3011\u30a2\u30cb\u30e1\u300c\u30dd\u30b1\u30c3\u30c8\u30e2\u30f3\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc \u30ec\u30c3\u30af\u30a6\u30b6 \u30e9\u30a4\u30b8\u30f3\u30b0\u300d\u30a8\u30f3\u30c7\u30a3\u30f3\u30b0\u30c6\u30fc\u30de\u300c\u30d4\u30c3\u30ab\u30fc\u30f3\uff01\u300d\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iKuLBnTU1dE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I realized it was the new official ending theme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFqxRKRpw5y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I was so ecstatic<\/a>\u2014I immediately showed all of my friends. I had guests staying over at my house at the time and I made them watch it too. I\u2019ve always been a massive Pok\u00e9mon fan since I was a literal baby so it was so incredible to feel like I was included in the Pok\u00e9mon universe in some capacity!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the sample in &#8220;Pikkaan!&#8221; was made<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While it&#8217;s light and catchy on the surface, the loop used in &#8220;Pikkaan!&#8221; features an intricate blend of carefully-placed drums, pitched vocals, and effects\u2014and although it has been reimagined in &#8220;Pikkaan!,&#8221; fans would be quick to recognize that the sample is a reflection of Petal Supply&#8217;s distinctive sonic identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I would describe my sound as playful, bouncy, and high energy,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I\u2019ve always been really inspired by trance music, especially the vocal trance of the &#8217;00s, and once I heard PC Music and SOPHIE, my perception of what kinds of sounds were possible was blown apart. I became obsessed with experimenting and seeing how far I could take my sound design, as well as pitching up and processing my vocals to a nearly unrecognizable point.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5iTzaatezJzsUhX1QjT0Kp?si=900e5c173a4b493c\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A lot of my sound design is initiated with fairly simple sounds made in either <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plugins\/39137242-serum-2-au-by-xfer-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serum<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reveal-sound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spire,<\/a> and I love to experiment with seeing how much I can distort these basic sounds into something new. I\u2019ve had a lot of fun using a combination of Ableton\u2019s stock effects like Grain Delay, Corpus, and certain spectral resonators, as well as things like <a href=\"https:\/\/goodhertz.com\/lossy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goodhertz&#8217; Lossy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.izotope.com\/en\/products\/trash.html?srsltid=AfmBOor32QEsONSTvu_FfqRZ_qrFZ6oCRGMUCbUdrJYUwgIvGdS70yIy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iZotope\u2019s Trash.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For this sample, I made all of the drum samples in Serum. I was playing around with seeing how my kicks would interact with multiple layers of Grain Delay. I tried filling out the loop in various ways; it kept sounding darker and more intense than I\u2019d like, so I decided to sample my own pitched-up and bent vocals to brighten the mood of the loop.
