When I first heard amapiano, I wanted to see if I could blend it with an EDM \/ pop sensibility. At the time, I was working with Tyla, and it felt like the perfect opportunity to experiment with this approach. Emerging in the 2010s, it&#8217;s characterized by its distinctive log drum basslines, smooth piano melodies, and rhythmic percussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Amapiano, like many other African genres, is percussion-driven,&#8221; Kooldrink says. &#8220;You\u2019ve got to get the drum groove right for it to be amapiano\u2014and the drums aren\u2019t something you learn; you either feel it or you don\u2019t.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amapiano artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While one can look no further than Kooldrink&#8217;s own discography to get a taste of amapiano, he recommends Surreal Sessions and Vigro Deep as other key artists who are pushing the genre forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Muziqal Tone\u2019s &#8216;Quick To Judge&#8217; is one of my favorite amapiano songs of all time,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;De Mthuda\u2019s &#8216;John Wick&#8217; is also one of the first OG amapiano songs. Real ones know what I\u2019m talking about.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/36jmVDHQ5ATRQuAkiJf4NS?si=8682b2b9ae804504\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/4nLJnkaFq9VNYVz1SxJsXi?si=39cf6dc6a4164447\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make amapiano music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in learning how to make amapiano music of your own, Kooldrink shares some of his go-to instruments, plugins, and key production techniques that you\u2019ll want to be aware of below\u2014see the video above for even more in-depth insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instrumentation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When it comes to instrumentation, the essential element is a big log drum,&#8221; Kooldrink tells us. &#8220;Without the log drum, it\u2019s not amapiano.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s Kooldrink&#8217;s checklist for instruments and elements that are key to amapiano:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Banging log drum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moving drum grooves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trumpet timekeeper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jazzy chords<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plugins \/ VSTs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I personally couldn\u2019t live without the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.image-line.com\/fl-studio-learning\/fl-studio-online-manual\/html\/plugins\/Fruity%20DX10.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fruity DX10<\/a> plugin\u2014this is where the OG amapiano &#8216;Log Drum&#8217; preset is,&#8221; Kooldrink shares. &#8220;I like to run the log drum through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.image-line.com\/fl-studio-learning\/fl-studio-online-manual\/html\/plugins\/Fruity%20WaveShaper.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fruity WaveShaper<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginsthatknock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DECAP&#8217;s KNOCK plugin<\/a> to give it a little more oomph and get it shaking the room.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Production techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Always layer the log drum with a sub that follows the same ADSR envelope,&#8221; Kooldrink recommends. &#8220;Don\u2019t bother cutting the low end of the log drum when layering the sub\u2014more is more here. Just make sure that the log drum and sub are phase-aligned, and you\u2019ll be good.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Also, always have a timekeeper\u2014an instrument or element that tells people when to bop their heads. It keeps movement. I like to use offbeat trumpets playing quarter notes. You can find the exact sample I use <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/sample\/c30cb6469b7bc42e3fae4762460dc24b808f4ab08e22fe55c51435c0c5c98f75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In general, treat your drums like the backbone of your song. If the drum loop by itself doesn\u2019t get your head moving, swap it out. And don\u2019t be afraid to clip that log drum for extra crunch\u2014a best practice is to put a soft clipper on the log drum for added drive.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amapiano music BPM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most amapiano music falls within the 110 &#8211; 115 BPM range. This <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/an-introduction-to-rhythm\/#:~:text=MIDI%20(piano%20roll)-,What%20is%20tempo%3F,-Last%20but%20not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tempo<\/a> is slightly slower than typical <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/what-is-house-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">house music<\/a> but faster than deep house, creating the genre\u2019s signature laid-back yet danceable groove. Some tracks may be slightly faster or slower, but this range maintains the balance between chill and energetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amapiano sample packs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, if you\u2019re looking for amapiano samples to incorporate into your productions, <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/sounds\/packs\/splice-sessions\/amapiano-pop-kooldrink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kooldrink&#8217;s own sample pack<\/a> is a great place to start your search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Making a sample pack is such a unique experience, and I\u2019d implore every producer to make one, even if it\u2019s just for themselves,&#8221; he shares. &#8220;Creating a sample pack forces you to hone in on what defines your sound. I had to sit down and really sketch out what Pop Piano is\u2014it&#8217;s something that has always existed in my head, but what is it, <em>exactly<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For this pack, I found that the best way to approach it was ironically to make full tracks. I made about nine full songs, and then exported their stems. From there, I sat down and created loops out of those songs. To me, that was the most intuitive way to go about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And there you have it\u2014hopefully this guide gave you a solid foundation for the key elements of amapiano music and actionable ideas for how you can produce your own track in the genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given its general recency, amapiano music is also certain to continue expanding and evolving at a rapid pace. &#8220;My take on where amapiano is headed is unique, since I&#8217;m the pioneer of Pop Piano, an offshoot of the original genre,&#8221; Kooldrink reflects. &#8220;I think amapiano in South Africa will always find new ways to evolve sonically, but I believe its real growth and evolution will come from how it\u2019s packaged for the rest of the world. We get it at home, we understand it in the streets\u2014but how do we make it more digestible for a larger audience?
