I heard a song on the radio called Alice DeeJay &#8220;Better Off Alone.&#8221; It had that synth sound and I was like, &#8220;What is this kind of sound? I love it.&#8221;\u00a0Since then, I started listening to more dance music. In the Netherlands, there was a lot of dance music on the radio. I decided to check it more. I was first mainly into trance.\u00a0That was big back in the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Wardt van der Harst<\/span><\/strong>: \u00a0There was always trance on the radio, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferrycorsten.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ferry Corsten<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arminvanbuuren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Armin van Buuren<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tiesto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tiesto<\/strong><\/a>. Stuff like that was always on the radio in Holland. We grew up with it.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: Then, in terms of you guys coming together and working with each other, can you tell us when you really decided to form W&amp;W?<\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: We both have had our own solo careers. We have been active for at least three years but every single track we have produced as W&amp;W sounds better then all of the stuff we do alone. So we decided to continue with this instead.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: In terms of your collaboration process, are you guys always working together in the studio when you start projects? Or do you individually start ideas and then bring them together?<\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: \u00a0We go to the studio and it is the best way for the creative process as well, to both be in the studio and discuss whatever is coming up.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0When you get started with projects, does one of you have a specialty going in? \u00a0Do you feel one of you is better on drum mixing for example, and the other one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Willem<\/strong>: \u00a0How we usually start is, I have an idea of what kind of track and Wardt always comes up with a melody. We used to work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propellerheads.se\/products\/reason\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reason<\/a>, but we could not use any free VSTs, so we are like, &#8220;OK, we have to switch.&#8221; Then we switched to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steinberg.net\/en\/shop\/cubase.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cubase<\/a> for a while and now we are in Ableton Live.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: Do you find with your busy schedule being on the road so much, that you find any time to compose ideas on the road, or are you mainly touring and then setting aside time in the studio?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0Both. When we are at home we are always in the studio. But some songs may release were made on tour like &#8220;<strong>Liftoff<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>Thunder<\/strong>&#8220;, they were both made on the road.<\/p>\n<h3>W&amp;W &#8211; Liftoff<\/h3>\n<p><iframe title=\"W&amp;W - Lift Off! (Official Music Video)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mDiXw_Lg0kw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: That is why the mix down is different.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0So you are mixing those down, to a large part, in headphones?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0Yeah, and then we go back to the studio and try to mix it down and improve the mix down, and sometimes it kills the whole vibe of the song. We very much like the sound of them.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0That is interesting. We have a picture of how you guys are working together and collaborating, but with other recent collaborations like with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.djhardwell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hardwell<\/strong><\/a>, what was that process like?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0For Hardwell, when we are in the studio together it is natural. We all have the same kind of vision, so it works really well. That is why we make a lot of tracks together. He is good at translating the song to the dance floor. I think he is the king in that.\u00a0Also EQing. He is a master of EQing.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0You guys are working mostly in the same room together?<\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: \u00a0Yeah, &#8220;<strong>Jumper<\/strong>&#8221; was made in a hotel room in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Hardwell &amp; W&amp;W - Jumper (Original Mix)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RCjvvuy-gas?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0What about the recent collab with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blasterjaxx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Blasterjaxx<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0They came over to our studio, and they had a couple of ideas and we had a couple of ideas, we fused it and made a track.\u00a0For us, making the song took maybe two or three days but the mix\u2011down took a month.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"W&amp;W &amp; Blasterjaxx - Rocket (OUT NOW!)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Xiu1DPhQuI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: \u00a0With Hardwell we did that, with<strong> Armin van Buuren<\/strong> we did that. We started in the studio and we did the final things on Skype, live. \u00a0We also did a track with <strong>Dimitri Vegas<\/strong>\u00a0which was via the Internet because they live in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: Can you tell us a little bit about some of go\u2011to plug\u2011ins?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0Still <strong>Sylenth<\/strong>, because it is easy to create your own sounds from scratch. That is what we do.<\/p>\n<p><b>Wardt<\/b>: \u00a0It is really powerful.\u00a0We have Spire as well. We also use\u00a0Diva, for more like&#8230; analog kind of sounds.\u00a0What else? It depends. Every synthesizer has its own character. For instance, if we want that old\u2011school trance vibe, we go to the old synths, like <strong>Zeta<\/strong>, <strong>Vanguard<\/strong>, and&#8230;<strong>V\u2011Station<\/strong>. It depends, because it sounds really thin. Are you mainly using tools native to Ableton Live live for mixing?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0<strong>OTT<\/strong>, which is multiband compressor. <b>Wardt<\/b>: \u00a0We use <strong>UAD Cambridge <\/strong>a lot\u00a0for EQing.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM:\u00a0<\/b>any projects or other collaborations in the works that you want to tell us about?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0We have a new one with <strong>Dimitri Vegas<\/strong> and <strong>Like Mike.\u00a0<\/strong>We&#8217;ve got another one with Hardwell as well.<\/p>\n<p><b>NM<\/b>: \u00a0So not that much sleep?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: \u00a0No. definitely not. Every couple of months we want to make new music for our sets, to keep things fresh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NM<\/strong>: Any words of wisdom to share?<\/p>\n<p><b>Willem<\/b>: It is important that you have your own sound, your original sound.
