Dissonance, which is the lack of harmony between notes or chords, is a key element in creating tension in a horror soundtrack. In particular, using the minor second (an interval of one semitone, or half step) can create an unstable feeling when alternating between it and its fundamental. John Carpenter allegedly wrote the theme after being inspired by both \u201cTubular Bells, Pt. 1\u201d from <em>The Exorcist<\/em> and from Goblin\u2019s <em>Suspiria<\/em> soundtrack, which came out one year prior to <em>Halloween<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most fascinating parts is that it modulates keys several times, changing from C minor to A minor to F minor to D minor and back to C minor. Artists like Dr. Dre (in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JqOJ2-j3jz4\">&#8220;Murder Ink&#8221;<\/a>) and J Dilla (in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Si_J7eF95HY&amp;t=163s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Featuring Phat Kat&#8221;<\/a>) have sampled it, but DJ Paul from Three 6 Mafia was a prolific user of this sample. It can be found throughout many of DJ Paul\u2019s production credits, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pWIxj4JDtEE?si=Sal2qDFci_I-9yf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)&#8221;<\/a> (2008), <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/orwJM802Ujw?si=ccKhkurc6RhyCcoT&amp;t=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Pass That Junt&#8221; feat. Lord Infamous<\/a> (1994), and even in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VoYYiAuan-I?si=DrsBI3Dc7BeaeEoC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an intro of an early mixtape<\/a> by him and Juicy J in 1993. Three 6 Mafia and other <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/what-is-memphis-rap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Memphis hip hop artists<\/a> influenced a new generation of artists to sample horror movies, like Spaceghostpurrp, who sampled &#8220;Halloween Theme&#8221; in the track <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-qE17OcrU78?si=1G4nhGWn_GeuPzuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Mystical Maze 2&#8221;<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three 6 Mafia was influential in bringing horror and hip hop closer together through their hypnotic beats and aggressive lyrics. DJ Paul sampled many other horror themes throughout his discography, including \u201cTubular Bells, Pt. 1\u201d from <em>The Exorcist<\/em> in the track <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PeabnIr6GM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Threesixafix&#8221;<\/a> (1997) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HZSnwJOQp0A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cMain Title\u201d<\/a> from <em>A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em> in the track <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/D41zN5wXR3w?si=b62bP6KfCaT9XQvJ\">&#8220;Silent Night Interlude&#8221;<\/a> (1994).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HZSnwJOQp0A?si=OiiJ399PqRh7zybq\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A Nightmare On Elm Street<\/em> also spawned songs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fVbaYFVUbLo\">&#8220;Nightmare On My Street&#8221;<\/a> by DJ Jazzy Jeff &amp; The Fresh Prince, which further blended horror into the mainstream. This track, which prominently samples Charles Bernstein\u2019s haunting melody from \u201cMain Title,\u201d had no official ties to the movie\u2014but still reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sampling ideas to take your tracks from wicked to hellish <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sample vocal snippets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the main theme to <em>A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em> perfectly sets the tone for the 1984 slasher, arguably the most important audio snippet to come from this film is the nursery rhyme that begins with &#8220;<em>One, two, Freddy\u2019s coming for you<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hOf1AsaJWXY?si=3FBinAltwlke-XZH\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>The unsettling, playful qualities of this rhyme have struck fear into the hearts of children and grown adults alike, and it has been interpolated in songs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VFT-UydFw7E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;X-Is Coming&#8221;<\/a> by DMX, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ii0rSwxVkFY?si=pq_vp6C1nXVkgmHK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;I Wish You Would&#8221;<\/a> by DJ Khaled, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HFhEOniLNXQ\">&#8220;Coming For You&#8221;<\/a> by DJ Clue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who says vocal samples need to appear human? The massive descending brass melody interpolates the &#8220;Dies Irae,&#8221; a 13th-century Gregorian chant that has been quoted in musical and literary contexts throughout history. Take this example from &#8220;Laura Smile,&#8221; the third track from the <em>Smile<\/em> OST\u2014the loud, repeated stabs starting at 5:58 are repeated into oblivion and disappear by 6:04, but they leave a clear mark in your mind.
