Although the terms &#8220;EP&#8221; and &#8220;LP&#8221; still have a place today in the modern musical lexicon, they share an important historical origin: <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/get-album-pressed-vinyl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vinyl records.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of music that can fit on a vinyl record depends on two different criteria: (1) the record\u2019s diameter, and (2) its rotational speed. Records come in three standard diameters (7\u201d, 10\u201d, and 12\u201d) and two standard rotational speeds (33 and 45 rpm; 78 rpm also exists, but is uncommon these days).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The faster the record spins, the higher quality the music will sound. Think about <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/exporting-your-track\/#:~:text=Audio%20resolution,or%2032%2Dbit).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the sample rate<\/a> of a piece of digital audio\u2014at a super-low sampling rate, let\u2019s say 10 kHz instead of the more typical 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, the music would sound \u201clo-fi\u201d and would retain no audible signal above 5 kHz. A faster-spinning record means more content delivered per second as the record spins, so a 45 rpm record will deliver increased audio fidelity compared to a 33 rpm record, at the cost of reduced capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we explore the difference between an EP and an LP, dive into their history, and explore the relevance of these mediums in the digital era. EP stands for \u201cExtended Play,\u201d and one would usually comprise a collection of 4 &#8211; 6 tracks, with a playtime of around 20 minutes. LP stands for \u201cLong Play,\u201d and one could feature 10 &#8211; 12 tracks and be double the length. The aptly-named \u201csingle\u201d featured just one song, typically accompanied by a \u201cB-side,\u201d which would be cut into the vinyl on the opposite side of the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Importance\">Why EPs and LPs still matter today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the advent of digital music collections has radically shifted this landscape, these terms are <em>so<\/em> entrenched in the music industry\u2019s lexicon that they&#8217;ve remained in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we continue to use the term &#8220;EP&#8221; to describe a slightly shorter release of 3 &#8211; 6 tracks, but there\u2019s no limit to the number of songs that can be released on a digital EP format. For example, artists and labels might release remix EPs with ten or more remixes of one song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, &#8220;LP&#8221; is used less and less nowadays, especially since the full vinyl album was supplanted by CDs in the &#8217;90s. However, the term is still generally understood to mean a full-length album of, say, 10 or more tracks over 40 or more minutes. In some genres and scenes, artists may prefer to use the term &#8220;LP&#8221; instead of &#8220;album&#8221; in order to situate the listener in the context of an older period of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Singles remain essentially the same, although nowadays they&#8217;re frequently released as just one single track, instead of routinely being accompanied by a B-side. Artists continue to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/tips-promoting-next-single\/\" target=\"_blank\">release and market singles to build buzz around their catalog.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to put previously-released singles on an album on streaming services<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If a single hits, you can expect to find it on an artist\u2019s eventual album release, especially now in the world of streaming music. When artists re-release singles as album tracks, their streaming numbers are added to the album\u2019s sales, inflating stream counts for an album instantly upon release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to include your single as an album track, make sure to keep the same audio and same ISRC code. DSPs will automatically attempt to match song content, so as long as you keep everything consistent, it should automatically show your single\u2019s streaming numbers if you re-issue it on an album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WhichFormat\">Singles, EPs, LPs, and albums: Know which format is right for you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you understand the meanings and differences of LP and EP, how do you decide which one is the right fit for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply, it doesn\u2019t really matter anymore whether you call your project an EP, LP, album, or something else entirely\u2014at least, not from an information storage capacity standpoint.
