Under the umbrella of waveshaping are several techniques that re-shape waves in different ways\u2014in this article, let&#8217;s explore two particularly popular methods with the help of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Minimal Audio's Rift. (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plugins\/39041405-rift-vst-au-by-minimal-audio\" target=\"_blank\">Minimal Audio&#8217;s Rift.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clipping \/ distortion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever heard a distorted guitar, then you&#8217;ve already heard waveshaping in action. Check out this dry guitar recording:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio alignwide\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Guitar-riff-NO-RIFT.wav\" preload=\"auto\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, listen to how the same recording sounds after Rift applies some heavy waveshaping:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Guitar riff RIFT\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y9OvekJYh8g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the terms are often used interchangeably, <strong>clipping<\/strong> is simply one common form of distortion. Clipping occurs when a sound source meets a threshold set manually by a clipping tool, or permanently by the limits of the software \/ hardware. Once the sound hits this threshold, the waveform begins to flatten against it. Clipping comes in two flavors: <strong>soft<\/strong> (where edges are rounded as they flatten) and <strong>hard<\/strong> (where hitting the threshold results in sharp corners).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Rift&#8217;s great visualizer, you can see the shape of the input transform in real time as we feed it a sine wave and crank up the intensity of the waveshaper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Sine   Square\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X09PudVXHfI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s another simplified visualization using <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"MeldaProduction\u2019s free MOscilloscope: (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meldaproduction.com\/MOscilloscope\" target=\"_blank\">MeldaProduction\u2019s free MOscilloscope:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sine-Square-MOSC.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This eventually gets us to approach <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/whats-in-a-wave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a square wave, (opens in a new tab)\">a square wave,<\/a> which is the result of all of the overtones created when hard clipping the signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wavefolding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>wavefolding,<\/strong> instead of clipping the signal at the threshold, what would&#8217;ve passed it is flipped upside down and added to the original wave. It&#8217;s as if the threshold were a mirror, reflecting the wave back onto itself. Here\u2019s an example, using a sine wave again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Rift Wavefold\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/79r5pVFC8D8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s another simplified visualization with MOscilloscope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rift-Wavefold-MOSC.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can hear that wavefolding creates a more metallic, harmonically complex version of the original sine wave.
